Sons of God
Sons of God
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
8:14 They will live because those who are led by the Spirit of God are children (literally “sons”) of God. Paul uses the word “sons” because of its connection with adoption and inheritance.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
8:15 Verse 15 makes the connection between the Spirit and adoption: believers have not received a spirit of slavery leading again to fear (of God); they have received a Spirit of adoption (literally “sonship”), by whom they cry, “Abba, Father!”
8:16 The Holy Spirit testifies with the believer’s spirit that the believer is a child of God.
8:17 As children of God, believers are also heirs—on the one hand, heirs of God, and on the other hand, coheirs with Christ—as long as they maintain their solidarity with Christ through present suffering to future glory.
From Suffering to Glory (8:18–30)
Paul expands on his thought from 8:17. Both human beings and creation itself groan in their present sufferings as they wait and hope for the final redemption. The Holy Spirit, who will bring about that redemption (8:11), sustains believers in the meantime and carries out God’s plan to bring them to glory.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he that is spiritual ljudgeth all things, yet he himself is ljudged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
2 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price
5 The warrior of wisdom is in strength,
and a man of knowledge is strong in power.
10 If you faint on the day of adversity,
little is your strength.
2 How long will ye judge unjustly,
And gaccept the persons of the wicked? Selah.
36 And leaving the crowd, they took him along, as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him
3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
But thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever;
And thy remembrance unto all generations.
13 Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion:
For the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.
19 But I myself know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go ⌊unless compelled by a strong hand⌋. 20 And I will stretch out my hand, and I will strike Egypt with all of my wonders that I will do in its midst, and ⌊afterward⌋ he will release you. 21 And I will give this people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, ⌊and then⌋ when you go, you will not go empty-handed.
18 If it is possible on your part, be at peace with all people. 19 Do not take revenge yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God’s wrath, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
