Introduction

There is a clear transition that takes place in the book of Daniel between chapters 6 and 7. The first half of the book deals with the life of Daniel in Babylonian captivity as well as under the initial rule of Darius the Mede in the Medo-Persian Empire. These first 6 chapters have been instructive to us with regards to how believers ought to live out our faith in the midst of pagan nations and governments as we seek to live as ambassadors of heaven here on earth. In these chapters we have repeatedly seen Daniel’s courageous faith, unmoving commitment to God’s will and to the pursuit of holiness, his steadfast relationship with the Lord through prayer, and his godly character on display in the face of persecution from his enemies. All of this has amounted to the death defying testimony of a godly prophet who doesn’t just talk the talk, but who walks the walk.
Daniel 7-12 is all apocalyptic. So I would submit that the first 6 chapters of Daniel have laid the groundwork for these last 6 chapters. Namely, Daniel’s godly character, spiritual integrity, and enduring faithfulness are all established in the first half and so he is a trustworthy source to give witness to the visions that God gave him during his life that he recounts for us in the last half. More importantly though is the fact that the character of God is firmly established and testified to in the first half so that as we approach the second half of the book, all prophetic and apocalyptic in nature, we can rest assured that our God reigns in sovereign control over ALL of the affairs of EVERY nation - past, present, and future.
Why study apocalyptic prophecy? What, if any, significance did Daniel’s visions have on his immediate audience if the visions he was seeing all dealt with future events?
Apocalyptic prophecy gives witness to God’s sovereign rule over the affairs of the Nations.
Apocalyptic prophecy should always stir eternal hope in the hearts of those who believe.
Apocalyptic prophecy should always serve to stir believers to a deeper intimacy in relationship with God.
Apocalyptic prophecy should challenge believers to always be ready to meet the Lord.
Apocalyptic prophecy should always serve to convict the unbeliever of their need for repentance and faith in Jesus Christ Who rules and reigns.
Daniel VII. Daniel’s Night Vision and Its Meaning (7:1–28)

Biblical apocalyptic should be understood as an actual account of what the writer saw and heard rather than contrived literature employed by a writer merely as a communicative tool.

Daniel VII. Daniel’s Night Vision and Its Meaning (7:1–28)

Symbolism is a key element in apocalyptic, and these symbols sometimes have baffled readers of books like Daniel and Revelation. Usually the meaning of figures is explained in the text itself. When this is not the case, their significance is often found in other Scriptures.

Daniel VII. Daniel’s Night Vision and Its Meaning (7:1–28)

A valid principle for interpreting prophecy is to accept the plain sense of the text unless there is good reason to adopt some other meaning.

Doctrinal Theme: “The Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom He will.” (4:32)
I suggest 3 purposes for the study of Daniel 7 - 12
Worship at the footstool of the King of glory.
Stir our hearts to declare and share the glory of the coming King with others.
Get ready because the grand stage of world events is set in place.

I. The Kingdoms of Men (Daniel 7:1-7; 15-23)

Daniel 7 runs parallel with Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in Daniel 2. King Nebuchadnezzar dreamt and saw a great image. The head was fine gold and represented the Babylonian empire. The chest and arms of silver represented the Medo Persian empire. The belly and thighs of bronze represented Greece. Lastly the legs of iron and the feet of clay represented the Roman empire.
Daniel’s vision in chapter 7 runs along the same lines only with more detail given about the ruler of the revived Roman empire of the last days and about the Satanic influence of that final kingdom as well as the Kingdom of God, which will come at the end of human history when Christ returns to establish His ruling authority over the earth in His 1,000 year reign.
Before we get into some of the details of these human kingdoms I want us to see the prophetic themes and language that Daniel uses as well as other prophets of scripture.
“I saw”, “I looked”, “Behold” - in the first 14 verses of Daniel 7 Daniel uses these visual expressions 14 times. We cannot read this chapter without understanding that what Daniel is describing he actually saw in his mind in the vision that was given to him. He is describing to us actual firsthand images and events that he sees taking place in the future and he wants us to “behold” them as well.
“The four winds of heaven” - seems to reference the spiritual force and power of God that moves over the earth to stir the movements of human history.

Then the goat became exceedingly great, but when he was strong, the great horn was broken, and instead of it there came up four conspicuous horns toward the four winds of heaven.

And as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom shall be broken and divided toward the four winds of heaven,

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.”

Up! Up! Flee from the land of the north, declares the LORD. For I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heavens, declares the LORD.

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree.

In the context of Daniel’s vision the four winds of heaven are stirring up “the great sea.”

Ah, the thunder of many peoples;

they thunder like the thundering of the sea!

Ah, the roar of nations;

they roar like the roaring of mighty waters!

13  The nations roar like the roaring of many waters,

but he will rebuke them, and they will flee far away,

chased like chaff on the mountains before the wind

and whirling dust before the storm.

And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads.

And the angel said to me, “The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages.

the great sea seems to be a reference to human history and the nations of men.
“Four great beasts” - these are the 4 greatest Kingdoms in the history of the human race. While all of these Kingdoms are different than one another, all of these Kingdoms share in common world dominion granted to them by God and yet they also share in common an arrogance that leads them to raise themselves up against God and His dominion and rule. The very One who gives them dominion is the One whom each Kingdom robs of glory and thanks due His name.
These 4 great kingdoms of men demonstrate the depravity of the human race on the grand scale of history.
Who are these Kingdoms? As I said earlier they parallel Nebuchadnezzars dream in Daniel 2.

The first was like a lion and had eagles’ wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it.

This first kingdom parallels the gold head of Nebuchadnezzar’s great image which represented Babylon. The reference to its wings being plucked off and then it being lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man is probably to God’s humbling of King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4.

And behold, another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’

The second kingdom parallels the silver chest and arms of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in Daniel 2 which represented the Medo Persian empire. It was raised up on one side signifying that the Persians were more powerful than the Medes. The three ribs in its mouth likely refers to the 3 major nations that were conquered by the Medes and Persians: Babylon, Egypt, and Lydia.

After this I looked, and behold, another, like a leopard, with four wings of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and dominion was given to it.

The third kingdom parallels the bronze belly and thighs of Nebuchadnezzar’s image in Daniel 2 which represents the empire of Greece. Alexander the Great led his conquering armies sweeping through the known world like a leopard. His sudden death gave rise to his 4 generals splitting their ruling authority over different regions of the kingdom.

After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. 8 I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things

This fourth kingdom parallels the iron legs and clay feet of Nebuchadnezzar’s great image of Daniel 2 which represents the Roman Empire. In Daniel’s vision the details of this empire are expanded upon by the fact that there will be in the last days of the last days of human history a revived Roman Empire made up of a 10 nation coalition and from that 10 nation revived Roman Empire a little horn will rise up and overtake 3 of those 10 nations. The text says that he will pluck them up by the roots and he will boast of great things.
Daniel’s vision gives us today both a review of the history of the greatest human kingdoms to rule in history as well as giving us the apocalyptic prophecies of what is yet to come.
Before I close I want to quickly show you from Revelation 13 the End Times parallel of both Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and Daniel’s vision.
We will expand on our understanding of what all of this means further next week, but I wanted us to see that what Nebuchadnezzar dreams, what Daniel envisions, and what the apostle John envisioned all amounts to God’s sovereign plan for bringing the Nations to Justice, Redeeming Israel and the Church, and establishing Christ’s dominion and rule on the earth and over His creation.
This is God’s plan and it cannot be thwarted. Through these prophetic scriptures God gives us a view from 50,000 feet up in the sky of what human history is going to look like. While there are signs nearer to the ground that we can look for and see in human history - Israel restored as a Nation (1948), increase in earthquakes, famines, and wars - what we often have trouble making sense of are the intricate threads occuring in our current day politics and happenings around the world.
However all signs point to the truth that we are extremely close to Daniel 7:13-14 becoming a reality.

Conclusion

The Ancient of Days is enthroned in Heaven. He is awesome and fierce. He knows the future because the future is His. He controls the rise and the fall of Nations. The Nations are as a drop in a bucket and like the dust on a scale to Him. Every single one of us is going to stand before Him and give an account. It would behoove each of us to stop living as though that day were a long way off or as though it is never coming. It is knocking on the door and the Church is chasing its proverbial tail out in the world.
The Church in the United States of America is the Laodicean Church of Revelation 3:14-21. There is no doubt in my mind.
Daniel had this vision in the first year of the reign of Belshazzar in Babylon. Daniel knew that the days of the Babylonian Kingdom were numbered and that his days were numbered. He did not settle into a foreign land and take his ease and comfort and invest himself in the affairs of this world. He sought after the Lord with all of his heart and he walked with God. He got ready spiritually, he stayed ready spiritually, and when the time came and the Medes and Persians swept in and conquered Daniel kept living for the Lord.
My job is to exhort us to get ready…to be the watchman on the wall of the city looking out over the landscape for coming invasion and then to turn and sound the alarm. Daniel was alarmed at what he saw in his vision. If we are paying attention to history in current context and to the happenings among the Nations (not just the United States) we should be alarmed as well and that alarm should be stirring us to prepare for our Bridegroom who at any moment can call us into His presence. It should be stirring us to warn those around us and to share the gospel with them. But I don’t see too many believers who are alarmed.
“And everyone who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure.” 1 John 3:3
How do we get ready?
repent of sin (ongoing, lifestyle repentance)
walk with Jesus diligently
study, memorize, and meditate on Scripture
pursue holiness
live faithfully in church community (don’t neglect gathering together)
admonish, love and encourage each other
be zealous for good works
share the gospel (witness, pass out tracts, make Jesus a part of our conversations)
take Jesus with you everywhere you go
