THE UPWARD CALL

Part 3: Sanctification – Excuses, Excuses, Excuses

Acts 19:1-7

  • 1 Thess. 5:23a, “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless…”
  • 2 Cor. 7:1, “...let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”
  • 2 Tim. 2:22, “Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
  • Romans 12:1-2, "I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is…"

Four Common Excuses For Not Being Sanctified Wholly:

1.) I’ve Never Heard Of The Experience.

  • Acts 19:2, “...we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
  • Romans 10:14, “How shall they hear without someone preaching?”
  • James 3:1, “...we who teach will be judged more strictly.”

2.) I Don’t Understand The Doctrine.

  • Yet, how many things do you enjoy without fully understanding?

3.) I’m Putting It Off For A While.

  • Some don’t want to surrender everything to God…. at least not yet. Why? Do you not trust God and His will for you?

4.) I Don’t Believe In Entire Sanctification.

  • 1 Thess. 4:7-8, “For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.”
  • 2 Peter 3:11-12, 14, “You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming... make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.”
