What price is required to buy the following:
School clothes for the coming year?
A new pair of boots?
For a bass boat?
For a dream house?
Last week I understand that a number of young people were baptized. Some today. They were baptized because they trusted Christ as Savior at camp.
But what did this salvation cost? Not for them – For them it was a free gift to receive. But this salvation, while free, was a very expensive gift.
What did this free gift cost Jesus? What did it cost Him to pay the penalty for our sin?
This morning I want us to remember that there is was price to pay for our salvation. May we continually remember this price that He paid for our sin.
This morning we will look closely at the price required to pay the penalty of sin. We find the description in an unlikely place. It is not found in one of the gospels. It is not found in the writings of Paul. Instead we will step back in time to the Old Testament. Here Isaiah looks ahead and describes what must have been a mystery to Him. But to us he writes and describes the price required to pay the penalty of sin.
(CSB) Isaiah 53 1 Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a young plant and like a root out of dry ground. He didn’t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at him, no appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him. 4 Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds. 6 We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all.

I. The Price Jesus paid for your sin: He gave up His rights / privileges

We live in a culture that clings to its rights above anything

A. Power to weakness

(CSB) Isaiah 53 2 He grew up before him like a young plant

1. The creator of all things

2. Now like a Spring sprout – mere disturbance in the ground - from nothing but dirt

B. Exalted to forgotten

(CSB) Isaiah 53 2 … And like a root out of dry ground.

1. Once a mighty tree – Towering clear cut field – offering life to all in its branches – worshiped and heralded in the universe

2. Now brought low – cut off – its greatness forgotton

3. A sprout shoots up from forgotteness -

4. Nothing in comparison

C. Magnificent to common

(CSB) Isaiah 53 2 … He didn’t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at him, no appearance that we should desire him.

1. The awe inspiring one – whose presence strikes fear – glistening – glowing – none able to stand in his presence

2. To the ugly sister – nothing in appearance that would cause one to desire Him – less than common . ordinary

D. Worshipped to rejected

(CSB) Isaiah 53 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him.

1. Honored by all (even demons) – The one everyone aspires to be

2. Now hated / despised / bullied / no esteem / disgraced

This was the price required to pay the penalty of our sin – He gave up His rights

II. The Price Jesus paid for your sin: He took on our troubles

The one who had no troubles took the weight of ours on Himself

A. Took our deserved heartache

(CSB) Isaiah 53 4 Yet he himself bore our sicknesses (griefs), and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.

1. He took on Himself our griefs- the grief that we deserved / Our sorrows fell upon Him / Our sadness/ Our pain / Our anguish / our burdens

2. He does understand our hurts – He endured them

3. Even when we didn’t consider Him worthy

B. Took our torture

(CSB) Isaiah 53 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth. 8 He was taken away because of oppression and judgment;

1. Afflicted – pushed down – beat physically/emotionally / spiritually

2. Led away to slaughter – the innocent slaughter for the guilty

3. Judged unjustly – and just took it - without complaint – did not strike back

C. Took our death

(CSB) Isaiah 53 8 … For he was cut off from the land of the living; he was struck because of my people’s rebellion. 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, …

1. Killed

2. Died with the worst

This was the price required to pay the penalty of sin – He took on our troubles

III. The Price Jesus paid for your sin: He received the penalty for sin

A. Punished by the Father

(CSB) Isa 53 10 Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. (His will) …

1. The Father punished Him

2. The just for the unjust.

3. Took the punishment that was deserved by us

B. Became our sin

(CSB) Isaiah 53 6 We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all.
(CSB) 2 Corinthians 5 21 He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us

1. We Strayed from God

2. We Chose our own way

3. We Missed the mark

4. He became all the bad that we were – Holy God becoming sin – rapist/murderer/terrorist/liar/gossip/disrupter

5. The Son took on Sin – then bore the just wrath of God for that sin. Every sin / the worst possible sin / the magnitude of it all / the volume of it all ---- The holy God became that

C. Took our penalty for sin

(CSB) Isaiah 53 5 But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.

1. He suffered

a. Pierced – our wrongdoing / rebellion
b. Crushed – our missing the mark
c. Punished – for us
d. Wounded – for us

2. Our problem He took on

3. So we could have joy

a. Peace / Health / He took on the weight of our sin

D. Became the true sin offering

(CSB) Isa 53 10 Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering, … 12… because he willingly submitted to death (poured out his soul unto death), and was counted among the rebels;

1. – suffering at the hands of the Father the punishment for sin

2. Crushed

3. Spiritual suffering

4. Guilt offering – consumed – ashes taken without the camp

5. Life poured out like a drink offering for those unworthy

E. Satisfied The Father’s justice

(NKJV) Isaiah 53 11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.

1. Justice satisfied – punishment made – justice realized --- It is finished

This was the price required to pay the penalty of sin – He satisfied the Father’s punishment for sin

IV. The Price Jesus paid for your sin: He gained the reward

A. Now is personally exalted

(CSB) Isaiah 53 10 … He will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished. … 12 Therefore I will give him the many as a portion, and he will receive the mighty as spoil, …52:13 See, my servant will be successful; he will be raised and lifted up and greatly exalted.
and extolled (lifted up) and be very high.

1. Though dead He will live and prosper

2. He will be rewarded and give reward to others

3. He will resurrect and be given glory

B. Now grants righteousness to many

(CSB) Isaiah 53 11 … my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities.
(CSB) 2 Corinthians 5 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him

1. Able to now make transaction change

2. The guilty becomes innocent as the innocent becomes guilty

3. Not just forgiveness but granted righteousness

C. Now makes intercession for the guilty

(CSB) Isaiah 53 12 … he bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.

1. Carry away the guilt of sin

2. Made intercession – took up the case of the wrong doers - ‘I have paid the price for sin ‘ No further punishment necessary

D. Now offers it all based on belief

(CSB) Isaiah 53 1 Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm (salvation) of the Lord been revealed?
(CSB) John 1 12 But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name,

1. Must receive it by faith

2. The price is paid for whoever by faith trust in what He has done. It received by faith.

This was the reward gained when He paid the price for sin
The question now that the price for sin has been paid is, “Will you receive this benefit?” Today trust in Him as your Savior.
If you are a Christian reflect on what He has done for you. Remember. Be changed as a result.
How can we any longer live for ourselves? How can we any longer live in the sin that He paid such a great price to forgive? How can we not surrender everything to Him?
Trust Him as Savior. Be baptized and follow Him. Join this church and invest your life in this place. Put sin aside and walk with Him. Be encouraged and live life to the fullest for Him.
