Trouble in the Text: One day we will all come to judgment.
What will happen when Jesus returns?
What will happen when Jesus returns?
On the Day of the Lord, Jesus, the Son of Man will return in glory with angels and sit on his throne, as Lord and King with majesty and grandeur.
Where is Jesus’ throne?
Where is Jesus’ throne?
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
Jesus will return to separate all the nations between the “Sheep from the Goats” [The righteous from the unrighteous]
Jesus will return to separate all the nations between the “Sheep from the Goats” [The righteous from the unrighteous]
In Jesus’ time, the sheep and goats were together in the fields during the daytime.
During the night the separated the sheep and the goats.
the sheep could be in relative cold because of their wool (more valuable)
the goats needed special care in warmth and comfort to survive
King Jesus calls those on his right, sheep “blessed” by the Father.
King Jesus calls those on his right, sheep “blessed” by the Father.
They are given their promised inheritance, authority in the kingdom of God.
How can we be ready for Jesus to return?
How can we be ready for Jesus to return?
35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
In other words, Love the King by Loving his sheep.
In other words, Love the King by Loving his sheep.
They did not realize that they had provided material help to the King.
Vss. 37-39 “Lord, when did we see you…?”
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
They are ambassadors and inheritors of Christ. How they are treated eternally matters.
They are ambassadors and inheritors of Christ. How they are treated eternally matters.
All the people of the earth are judged by their response to the Gospel.
They don’t value themselves and their good work as much as God does.
Vs. 40 John Wesley wrote in comment, “Remember to do good to all [people].”

39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
The humble understand that humans are not that different. We need all the help we can get.
Also, if we are to find righteousness, we need to help all that we can.
Our belief is made clear through the love we show others.
Our belief is made clear through the love we show others.
This means that we should be hospitable to everyone who is of need, as we are able.
Living righteously with love leads to eternal life in Christ.

Trouble in the World: When we are selfish, our needs are left unmet.
When we are selfish, we are left empty.
When we are selfish, we are left empty.
Selfish ambitions point to our need for righteousness that only comes from God and leaves others without the needs that could be met through them.
Eternal hellfire was created for Satan and his angels, when we choose to be selfish we join in his reward.
Eternal hellfire was created for Satan and his angels, when we choose to be selfish we join in his reward.
Sinners will claim ignorance to justify their apathy. “I didn’t know” [they didn’t want to know]
What is the work of worthy of eternal hellfire?
What is the work of worthy of eternal hellfire?
42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
Jesus is not ambiguous.
Jesus is not ambiguous.
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
They did not care for or help the King.
They did not care for or help the King.
Unless you are Jesus, the only righteous judge of hearts, you cannot know with certainty who is a righteous or unrighteous.
Unless you are Jesus, the only righteous judge of hearts, you cannot know with certainty who is a righteous or unrighteous.
You can only do good and encourage the good.
You can only do good and encourage the good.
39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
This means that we should be hospitable to everyone who is of need, as we are able.
Thank God that he does know the true condition of our hearts.
There can be no eternal reward without eternal punishment.
There can be no eternal reward without eternal punishment.
Grace in the Text:
Jesus rewards us for our compassion and selfishness.
Jesus rewards us for our compassion and selfishness.
8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
The unrighteous will “go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous [loving] to eternal life.” VS. 46

We should return grace to God by extending grace to others, as God first granted us grace.
We should return grace to God by extending grace to others, as God first granted us grace.
Then we should help all we can, especially when others cannot return the favor.
Faithful disciples in Jesus Christ extend grace to all other, as they are able with the help of God.
Grace in the World: God rewards compassion and corrects selfishness.
We do the best good by being compassionate to everyone, especially to those who cannot return the favor.
We do the best good by being compassionate to everyone, especially to those who cannot return the favor.
Jesus himself shows loving, sacrificial care for others, in particular the poor and needy. We look like him when we do the same.
Jesus told us how to be prepared for his return, we are faithful by doing it.
We must do all that we can to share the love of God with others by showing compassion like Christ as if they are Christ in need.
We must do all that we can to share the love of God with others by showing compassion like Christ as if they are Christ in need.
This is how we show that we truly believe that Christ is King.
