Released on the Sabbath

The synagogue leader isn’t happy about this, he’s mad. “How dare Jesus do any form of work on the sabbath.”
The Importance of People
Jesus uses the same word to convey the point with a donkey and the woman when he says untie and loosed.
lyo- which is to loose something.
Anyone would loose their animal, why shouldn’t this woman be loosed.
We see Jesus’ love for people and how much more important is a child of God, even more a child of Abraham than an animal.
I think we have this a little backwards today. We live in a nation that wants to save the spotted owl. Protect the forest. But doesn’t see the problem in killing babies.
Sabbath=Freedom
We recognize that the sabbath is a day of rest that God has given.
The sabbath was the physical sign of God’s covenant with man. Man was to work for 6 days then rest on the 7th just as God did. Rest because in 6 days creation was complete, rest because there was nothing that they could do add to it. Rest because God had revealed this to Israel and they were to do it remembering that they were His people.
In Deuteronomy, a point of remembrance was added to the Sabbath.
Deuteronomy 5:15
Deuteronomy 5:15 ESV
15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
Israel was also commanded to remember on the Sabbath that they were free, free from the slavery of Egypt.
Jesus takes this freedom and see’s a connection in the people being freed from Egypt and this woman being freed from Satan.
This is why it was fitting for the woman to be healed on the Sabbath.
v.16- Ought not, Jesus sees the significance of freedom
This same act of freedom is what we should be remembering when we gather together and worship.
Colossians 1:13-14
Colossians 1:13–14 ESV
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
He has delivered us, freed us, now we are citizens of the kingdom of light!!
This is all because of the beloved Son, whom through we have forgiveness of sins.
This is also why we worship on Sunday!
Sunday is the day our Lord and savior rose from the dead, the reason we have freedom for our sins!
Colossians 2:16-17
Colossians 2:16–17 ESV
16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
The law, the festival’s, the Sabbath; they were all a shadow, a type of Christ. The all pointed to Jesus. But the fulfillment belongs to Him.
The Sabbath was given as a day to remember that God had created all things, that we contribute nothing to creation, we now worship on Sunday, remembering that Jesus has redeemed us and that we contribute nothing to our salvation.
The Sabbath was to remember that they were freed from slavery. Sunday is to remember that Jesus has freed us from sin.
Resting on the Sabbath reminded them that God has made Himself known to them. On Sunday we remember not just that He has make himself known, but that He rose again from the dead after He made atonement for our sins.
This is why the substance belongs to Christ.

The Kingdom of God

Therefore tells us that these parables tie directly into what Jesus has just done for the woman.
v.18-20
This woman being freed is one small link in the chain, one ripple in the effect on the world.
The forces of darkness are prevalent in the world, however it is through the power of Christ that people are changed, and it is one person at a time.
When Jesus came, it wasn’t to change society, He came to call individuals to repentance and that is done one person at a time.
The gospel isn’t we all need to vote the same way and make this world a better place to live. The gospel is Jesus came to free us from our sins and give us a new hope for a kingdom that isn’t of this world.
What is the kingdom your living for? Is it an earthly kingdom, or an eternal kingdom that your living for? Many Christians say it’s for a heavenly kingdom, but live like it’s for an earthly kingdom.
John 18:36
John 18:36 ESV
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”
Jesus wasn’t fighting at His trial or execution because His kingdom isn’t on earth.
Mustard Seed
The smallest of the seeds. Jesus says that even though it starts off as something that is small. It will grow into something huge.
So huge the birds will come and nest in it.
Ezekiel 17:22-23
Ezekiel 17:22–23 ESV
22 Thus says the Lord God: “I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar and will set it out. I will break off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. 23 On the mountain height of Israel will I plant it, that it may bear branches and produce fruit and become a noble cedar. And under it will dwell every kind of bird; in the shade of its branches birds of every sort will nest.
I think Jesus is referring to this passage.
The small sprig is the messiah.
Yet He shall grow and be a home for every kind of bird. These birds represent the nations of the world. Everyone of every kind coming to find refuge in the messiah has been the plan of God for all times.
This was a message especially for the disciples. That the message of the kingdom would start out with just a few of them, and would grow, going even to all the nations of the world.
Leaven
Usually not used as something good, Jesus uses it to describe sin. However here leaven is appropriate for that is exactly how the kingdom will grow.
The leaven starts out in just a small amount, but it grows and soon takes over the whole batch.
There might not be many of us trying to reach people with the gospel, but as we do, it’s like leaven it grows, it takes over the world until it effect all who God desires it to effect.
We are called to fulfill the great commission.

This is 5 periods, whether that is 1 to 2 yrs.
You will have trained 10 people, but have the potential of reaching so much more.
