The Humility of Jesus (1-5)

His hour had come to depart - a change of locations (like stepping on a plane).
1 John 3:14 ESV
14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.
Christ has changed us in the same way.
Christ loved his disciples completely - even Judas Iscariot. Notice the source of Judas’ plot to betray Jesus. He listened to Satan rather than to Christ.
In order to serve you have to know your purpose. You have to know Whose you are and Where you are going!
He laid aside - Christ set aside his heavenly glory to come to earth and die for us. Here he takes on the role of the lowest servant.

The Matter of Holiness (6-11)

Peter was repulsed by the idea of Jesus, the master, taking on the role of the lowest servant.
Christ was offering fellowship. He has served us by cleansing us (bathed) from our sin.
Now all that is necessary is a washing from the daily dust of life.
John 15:3 ESV
3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.

The Happy Servant (12-17)

He has first been cleansed by Christ.
He now serves others as Christ has served him.
Galatians 5:14–15 ESV
14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.
James 1:22–27 ESV
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. 26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
