Engaging in the Historical Disciplines

LOOKING BACK (Care and Accountability)

· How was your week (highlights, difficulties, challenges, etc.)?
· In what way did you influence someone this week in their relationship with the King?

Week 5: Worship

Facet Overview

Discipline should work in concert with dependence, since grace is not opposed to effort but earning. The multiple benefits of the time-tested disciplines of the faith contribute to spiritual formation in the same way that training prepares us for skillful endeavor.

Sub-Themes

A balanced view of both dependence and discipline.
An appreciation for the multiple benefits of the spiritual disciplines.
A look at some basic Spiritual Disciplines that lead to a mature walk with Christ

Personal Reading Time

Find a quiet place each day to slowly read the passage(s) out loud to yourself.
Sit in the silence and listen to what is God saying to you through the passage(s)?
This Week’s Readings:
Isaiah 6:1-8

Isaiah’s Vision of the Lord

6 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;

the whole earth is full of his glory!”

4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Isaiah’s Commission from the Lord

8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”

· In light of this weeks sub-themes, what is the author saying? Worship, what Isaiah experienced in the presence of the Lord. His natural response was awe/fear, not because he was in the presence of something bad, but because he was in the presence of someone so good and he was not close to being worthy, and yet it was the Lord who gave him this vision, and then cleansed him.
· What word or phrase gets your attention in this reading?
Holy, holy, holy, we usually say things twice for emphasis and truthfulness, here this is said 3 times, The LORD is unique, set apart, unlike us, good, pure, etc. and Isaiah quickly realizes he is not.
Woe is me, the natural response for being in the presence of something so good is to see how not good you are.
Your guilt is taken away, your sin atoned for, our sin is not gone, it is not forgotten, but the guilt of it is taken away and the price for it has been paid.
Here I am, send me, because of what God did for Isaiah, guilt removal sin atonement, Isaiah is willing and wanting to go and do.
· What in your life needs to hear this word or phrase right now? Another phrase I didn’t list is that “the whole earth is full of His glory”. He and His glory are everywhere, do I see and experience it. In light of Him, do I see myself properly, and when I do, do I confess, am I overcome with awe, fear, in the presence of supreme goodness.
· What is God inviting you to do in response to this word or phrase? Bask in His glory, on this side of the cross fear of punishment or death is not an option, but awe, fear in the presence of goodness, realization, confession, and lastly, send me, a willingness to go for God, to do for God because of what He’s done for me.
· Be prepared to share how the passage(s) impacted you with the group (make a note).
Psalm 9:1-2, 10-11

I Will Recount Your Wonderful Deeds

9  TO THE CHOIRMASTER: ACCORDING TO MUTH-LABBEN. A PSALM OF DAVID.

1  I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart;

I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

2  I will be glad and exult in you;

I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

10  And those who know your name put their trust in you,

for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.

11  Sing praises to the LORD, who sits enthroned in Zion!

Tell among the peoples his deeds!

· In light of this weeks sub-themes, what is the author saying? Giving thanks is an act of worship, which stems from our recounting what God has done, because of who He is.
· What word or phrase gets your attention in this reading?
Recount all your wonderful deeds, focus on, think over, remember all of what He’s done, in history and for me. This is cause for worship.
Those who know your “name” put their trust in You, His name, His character, truly know Him as shown to us by Jesus, to know Him is to love Him, to worship Him
for You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You, there is a counter response, we must desire Him, seek after to find, so we can know, God will not abandon or reject these.
· What in your life needs to hear this word or phrase right now? The part that questions my heart, my seeking and my desire to know Him, is this why my worship is low. The part that needs to recount all His wondrous deeds.
· What is God inviting you to do in response to this word or phrase? Remember, recount, ponder, dwell on His character, to know Him better so I can worship Him more.
· Be prepared to share how the passage(s) impacted you with the group (make a note).
Luke 17:11-19
Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers
11 On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance 13 and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” 14 When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; 16 and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”
· In light of this weeks sub-themes, what is the author saying? You can call Jesus Master when you need something, but will you come back and fall on your face before Him when you get it and give Him praise and thanks?
· What word or phrase gets your attention in this reading? “Now he was a Samaritan.” Here again Jesus uses a Samaritan to emphasize a point, that just because a Jew had religious awareness of God and proximity and access, doesn’t mean they act and do what’s right, doesn’t mean they truly know this God or worship Him properly.
“Fell on his face” this is obvious sign of humility and worship, acknowledging true greatness in your presence.
“Your faith has made you well” played and active role in his physical healing, but more importantly in his spiritual healing evidenced by his return and posture before Jesus.
· What in your life needs to hear this word or phrase right now? This immediate need of the leper was met by Jesus, but it produced immediate worship and thanksgiving and I wonder how many of the needs or good things in my life do I take for granted? When do I or have I fell on my face like this man before the Lord?
· What is God inviting you to do in response to this word or phrase? Acknowledge Him, worship Him, give Him thanks, humble myself
· Be prepared to share how the passage(s) impacted you with the group (make a note).
