Pray

I hope you have, regularalry, ideally daily,
(and if not then we should be) ,
I hope we have found ourselves convicted by God’s spirit,
thankful for Jesus,
and exicted about the hope set before us,
to make a real effort to live each day for God and God alone.
You wake up
YOu’ve read the bible and prayed,
you’ve worked hard to demonstrtae the fruit of the spirit so far,
You’ve rehersed in your mind speaking to a collegue about Jesus,
You’ve called to your chidlren to make sure they have done their quiet time,
and you’ve avoided joining the insessant gossip on a whatsapp group,
And then we get our of bed and it’s all down hill from there!
giving in to temptations
serving ourselevses not God,
- what ever variety you or I most personally struggle with.
a sinless day seems beyond us.
How should we respond towards God when we sin yet again,
turrning our backs on his ways and paths for our lives.
And choosing our own king?
We feel guitly,
Ashamed
low,
perhaps anxious.
This is the point 1 Samuel will address today.
The quetsion they ,
and we want to know,
is

Is there any hope.

And I’m afraid it doesn’t really start well!
The passage seems to have 2 parts
In v1-15 God reminds or reveals to the Israelites (through His leader and prophet Samuel),
that ‘Left to themselevs’ the Israelietes are in real trouble!
so, Part 1 - is called left to oursleves.
Part 2, v16-25 -is a reminder of actual reality - And that is when things are ‘left to God.’
The structure is on your handouts -

Part 1 - Left to ourselves

1 - God’s Good Leader Rejected v1-5 (and, 11, 24)

v1-5 is Samuel laying out before the people what life has been like with Him,
God’s chosen and faithful leader.
(and you might say, would have continued to be like if they hadn’t rejected God’s rule)
He couches this mock trial against himself in very simple language,
He sets the scene
1 Samuel 12:1–2 NIV
Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened to everything you said to me and have set a king over you. Now you have a king as your leader. As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have been your leader from my youth until this day.
You know me,
you know how I was chosen by God,
when God miraculaously allowed Hannah my mother to concieve,
and so I dedicated to the Lord’s service.
They had no hope for the former Preist Eli’s son’s to lead them well
- they were already terrible and imorral preists,
But God provided a Good leader for them in Samuel.
Perhaps that’s why Samuel makes reference to his own sons here
who are also known to be unacceptable leaders,
becasue it wasn’t like Eli’s wayward sons STOPPED God’s good rule through a good leader.
God always has a good way forward for his people - if they are willing to trust and obey him.
And so, goes on Samuel
1 Samuel 12:3 NIV
Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have done any of these things, I will make it right.”
Samuel knows what there answer will be..
1 Samuel 12:4 NIV
“You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied. “You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.”
And so, he makes it clear
that to have asked for a King
is to have rejected God’s Good leader -
The King they have asked for is predicted to ‘take, take, take, take’ - in chapter 8.
WHat have I taken asks Samuel?
1 Samuel 12:5 NIV
Samuel said to them, “The Lord is witness against you, and also his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand.” “He is witness,” they said.
It’s foolish and ironic is the message,
to have turned away from God’s Good and chosen leader.
Pause
For us, It is foolish and ironic to turn away from God’s Good Leader - Jesus.
The world today, takes, takes, takes, takes.
Whatever we pursue - we becomes slaves to - we have to feed out king.
But what does Jesus take - well if anything - he takes our judgement, our worries, our fears and concenrs.
But more so he Gives, gives, gives!
Jesus’s hands have less than nothing in them like Samuel - only the wholes are visible from his crucfiction!
To reject Jesus means the same as v5 again:
The Lord God will be witness against us, and also his annoiunted (Jesus)!
It’s a terrible thing to deny Jesus,
to say his commands don’t matter,
to pursue other things.
That attitude of rejecting God’s leader - God’s plan is actually to fulfill
our second point:

2 - God’s Good Grace Rejected v6-11

These few verse (6-11) summarise a few very significant times in the history of Israel
where God saved, delievered his people out of slavery, or oppression.
It’s God’s way of reminding the people that their behaviour is nothing new.
This rejection of god’s Good leaders is echoed through history,
and the foolishness of it is not to be missed!
1 Samuel 12:6 NIV
Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the Lord who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought your ancestors up out of Egypt.
He continues this trial against them:
1 Samuel 12:7 NIV
Now then, stand here, because I am going to confront you with evidence before the Lord as to all the righteous acts performed by the Lord for you and your ancestors.
The partern is clear in these verses,
God saves,
the people rebel,
the people then cry out,
and God saves.
And each time comes the empty promises of God’s people
1 Samuel 12:10 NIV
They cried out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned; we have forsaken the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths. But now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve you.’
I say empty,
not becasue they weren’t neccesserily genuiene at the time of repentance and recommitment,
but becasue they only last as long as the next temptation,
or trial comes.
It feels a bit like our daily efforts to commit ourselevs to obedience to the Lord,
only to find tempation or trial cuts us short from fulfilling our desire.
That’s what we’ve seen in 1 Samuel -
1 Samuel 12:12 NIV
“But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule over us’—even though the Lord your God was your king.
How foolish to repeatedly reject the Good grace of God.
Again and again and again.
Do we ever feel like that?
Do that?
PAuse
The question they might have - as might we is

3 - Is there any hope? v12-15

1 Samuel 12:13–15 NIV
Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you asked for; see, the Lord has set a king over you. If you fear the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good! But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your ancestors.
Maybe there is some hope?
If they fear the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel against his commands
But also, if not only they,
but this new king they have asked for also follows the Lord their God -
well then - and only then will things be:
( as the end of v14 puts it:)
Good!
BUT - and what a big but it is - always enjoy saying that in a sermon!
But - if they don’t -
the the cycle of God’s judgement will come again upon them.
So, Is there any hope?
God is making a pormise he will keep,
But it’s a promise that relies on them,
on us getting to breakfast time without sin,
selfishness,
unkind thoughts!
We’ll never be perfect!
A salavtion based on OUR efforts and OUR works and OUR determination
Even as Spirit filled people (which the Israeliets were not -
gets us nowhere.)
Barely out of bed before a sinful thought,
A gospel of salavtion by works - is not really good news at all to a people who are fallen.
For before long it demonstrtaes our rejection of God’s chosen leader - for them Samuel -for us Jesus.
And it demonstrtaes a rejection of God’s Good Grace - for them freedom from slavery in Egypt, for us freedom from our slavery to sin and an eternity in hell into a eternity of enjoying the prescesne of God.
Part 1 - Left to ourselevses - is there any hope?
Don’t kid yourselevs - NO.

Part 2 - Left to God

Though they certainly do not deserve it.
And as we have discovered - could never earn it,
This story is not over.

1 - God’s Great Power Revealed v16-19

emphasise ‘Stand Still’
1 Samuel 12:16 NIV
“Now then, stand still and see this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes!
Oh if only we learnt to ‘STand Still’ more often and admire the ‘great revelation of God’s power today’
.
For the revelation of God’s Great power does something significant to those prepared to stand still and see it:
1 Samuel 12:17 NIV
Is it not wheat harvest now? I will call on the Lord to send thunder and rain. And you will realize what an evil thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.”
Thunder and rain at harvest time, in this part of the world - well it doesn’t happen -
and it cetainly doesn’t happen simply when someone says it will!
And what does this revelation of God’s power do?
It brings recognisiton of how evil and weak and undeserving we are
of a God who created and controls all things!
1 Samuel 12:18 NIV
Then Samuel called on the Lord, and that same day the Lord sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe of the Lord and of Samuel.
ONly the true God of all could do this.
As the thunder roars and echos across the dry land.
Stand still and see the power of God revealed.
And see they did - and recognise their evil they did
1 Samuel 12:19 NIV
The people all said to Samuel, “Pray to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.”
Pause
Ahh - but we don’t see the great power of God revealed to us today do we?
Well maybe that’s becasue we don’t stand still!
We’re still chasing and follwoing other kings!
But stand still for a minute and look where God tells us to look!
The NT is clear!
Romans 1:16 NIV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
And what is the gospel? v17 a

17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed

God’s power is revealed to those who ‘stand still’ and look in the gospel - for it is good news and powerful,
becasue God demonstrtaes his righteousness!
Simply - Jesus’ death on the cross - where he chooses to take the right punishmenet we deserve - satisfies God’s righteousness - justice is done.
But transfers that rightesousness to those who believe by faith that Jesus our king did that for us!
Stand still and look at the cross of Jesus - for there you will see God’s power!
Not is our works, or efforts each morning to obey - on the cross!
And what does looking at that great power of God do for us?
It casues us to see how evil we are!
For God in the person of Jesus gave himself
becasue we are so sinffully falling short of his righteousness!
Do you see - these great demonstrtaions of power in the OT
- that bring about a temporary recognition of sin and evil -
-points us to the ulimate display of his power,
that stands on the hill for us to stnad still and see permanently -
so that we recognise we are evil and sinful by nature.
The question is
- Why is God still displaying his power and casueing us and the Israelites to see our sin?
We certainly don’t deserve his effort and time..
Amd more importantly - Is there any hope!
Surely now we are all doomed!

2 - God’s Great Name Protected v20-25

Well what great reassurance these nexts words are:
1 Samuel 12:20 NIV
“Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart.
Do not be afraid!
For a people destined for destruction,
For us who are destined for an eternal judgement of hell,
to hear those words,
Do not be afraid.
Wow.
Don’t think you’re too bad,
and certainly don’t think you’re too good for God.
Instead - do not turn away from God!
1 Samuel 12:21 NIV
Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless.
how true that is,
but hear is the central joy of faith in God
1 Samuel 12:22 NIV
For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own.
Wow!

3 - Is there any hope?

Of course there is hope!
For our salavtion,
our freedom from sin and evil,
our escape from the deserved judgement of hell is by no means reliant
on you or me trying our hardest each day to please God!
Our slavtion relies on the unchanging, unchangable Lord God Almighty!
It pleases Him to make us his own!
It is to protect his great NAME!
And what a Joy that is to hear.
The Israleiets can cyle through endless patterns of rebelion, repentance and rescue -
it will not change God’s pleasure in saving his people for himself to proetct His Great Name!
What a Joy!
As the cross of Jesus reveals the power of God and convicts us of our sin,
we at the very same time see God protecting his name and his righteousness,
and we see HIS grace,
His power,
His pleasure,
to save His people!
Eph 2 4-5 comes back to us in great encouragement from last week
Ephesians 2:4–5 NIV
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
Is there any hope -
YES - the only hope,
and it’s nothing to do with us - it is by God’s good pleasure.
pause
This tradgic story of no hope when ‘left to ourselevs’ in 1 Samuel,
leaves us crying out for a better King than Saul.
A perfect King - who by his own strength and power will save His people.
Who will be perfectly obedient to the Lord God.
They would have to wait for Jesus - we do not.
So, tomorrow when you wake up eager to please the Lord,
remember - your salavtion does not depend on your ability to achieve it!
Far from it!
Your salvation depends on God’s great power displayed on the cross of Jesus,
His Great grace shown to you,
to protect His great name.
And therefore we are secure.
So,
why wouldn’t we spend our days striving to please Him with our evey breath.
Wake up tomrorw motivated by God’s grace and name and pleasure to save you.
And stand still and look at the cross each time we fail.
If you need a verse to remind you to do exactly that
- well it’s right here at the end of this chapter:
1 Samuel 12:24 NIV
But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.
