What is Redemption?
Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary Redeem, Redemption, Redeemer

To pay a price in order to secure the release of something or someone. It connotes the idea of paying what is required in order to liberate from oppression, enslavement, or another type of binding obligation.

Remember a time when you were redeemed?
What was it like to wait for redemption?
What did it cost? Time, money, sacrifice, education etc.
What did it feel like to know it was someone else who had to pay the ‘price’ for you?

Boaz Redeems Naomi and Ruth V 1-12

Context for Redemption in OT
Redemption of the land
Leviticus 25:23-25
Leviticus 25:23–25 NASB95
23 ‘The land, moreover, shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are but aliens and sojourners with Me. 24 ‘Thus for every piece of your property, you are to provide for the redemption of the land. 25 ‘If a fellow countryman of yours becomes so poor he has to sell part of his property, then his nearest kinsman is to come and buy back what his relative has sold.
Deut 25:5-10
Deuteronomy 25:5–10 NASB95
5 “When brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her to himself as wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her. 6 “It shall be that the firstborn whom she bears shall assume the name of his dead brother, so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel. 7 “But if the man does not desire to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to establish a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’ 8 “Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him. And if he persists and says, ‘I do not desire to take her,’ 9 then his brother’s wife shall come to him in the sight of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face; and she shall declare, ‘Thus it is done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.’ 10 “In Israel his name shall be called, ‘The house of him whose sandal is removed.’
The land of Elimeleck is under some sort of mortgage…Possibly occurred in the time of the dought or while they were living in Moab.
The Mortgage is now on the head of Naomi/Ruth

Boaz was able to redeem Ruth/Naomi
Boaz and Christ (Same but not exactly)
John 8:34
John 8:34 NASB95
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.
Eph 2:1-2
Ephesians 2:1–2 NASB95
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
Careful with terminology
Kinsman - The only begotten son became flesh
Cost - Death, which is the consequence of sin…cost was not paid to the devil.
Willing - Philippians 2:5-9
Philippians 2:5–9 NASB95
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,
Important to remember that examples in the OT that are a foreshadowing of the redemptive work of Christ are not perfect…They must always put into context
Ex. Ransom paid to devil etc.

The Joy of Redemption V. 13 -15

Read 13-15
Motif of death/sin/bondage v. life/joy/redemption/resurrection
Naomi countenance was bitter, sad and despondent as a result of death
Additional burden of dealing with the land/mortgage etc.
New life that is found through the birth of Obed brings life.
V. 15
The gift of life is always associated with freedom, joy and happiness. Money or possessions can never substitute for what is experienced

Genealogy V. 16-22

Redemption is never impossible for God.
Deut 23:3-4
Deuteronomy 23:3–4 NASB95
3 “No Ammonite or Moabite shall enter the assembly of the Lord; none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall ever enter the assembly of the Lord, 4 because they did not meet you with food and water on the way when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you.
Our God is truly the God of all people, but the choice is our to commit as Ruth did with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.
