In His Name Series
Adonai: supreme Lord of all
The Lord our Shepherd
The Lord our Banner
The Lord our Righteousness
This morning we will be looking at another name of God.
Jehovah Jireh “The Lord will Provide”
Please turn with me to Genesis chapter 22 and stand up with me as we read God’s Word
Genesis 22:1–14 (ESV)
22 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

PRAY
As Paul prayed in Ephesians 1,,,
Ephesians 1:15–23 (ESV)
Father of glory, please give us the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of you, 18 enlighten us, open our eyes and open our hearts, that we may know what is the hope to which you God have called us, what are the riches of your glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of YOUR power toward us who believe

22 After these things God tested Abraham
Christian...
Not be surprised by a test, trial, or tragedy
James 1:2–4 (ESV)
Testing of Your Faith
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
God is making us holy.
Equips and educates us with every test
tests up to the point you can pass
Abrahams test at 75yrs old is different than 100yrs old
Test you just went through would have crushed you 5 years ago
maybe you're in a test right now, and you’re just waiting on Jehovah Jireh
God is faithful,
knows what’s best,
forming you into the image of Jesus
God’s Call of Abraham
God’s Call of Abraham
Genesis 12:1–3 (ESV)
The Call of Abram
12 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

EGYPT
EGYPT
famine in the land when they arrive, so went down to Egypt
Abraham is afraid, so tells Sarah to pretend she’s his sister, so they won’t kill him.
Taken into the house of Pharaoh
God intervenes and causes plagues to happen and Pharaoh and he calls abraham and is like what have you done to us?!?
Sends them away as fast as possible.
God’s Covenant with Abraham
God’s Covenant with Abraham
Genesis 15:1–6 (ESV)
15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” 4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
God made his covenant with Abraham, the Lord passed through the sacrifice as a flaming torch and a smoking pot signifying the presence of God
Ishmael
Ishmael
Chapter 16, Sarah and Abraham grow impatient with God. They take matters into their own hands. Sarah gives Hagar to Abraham to produce an heir.
This was not according to the will of God
Genesis 17:18–19 (ESV)
18 And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!” 19 God said, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.
Birth of Isaac is promised
Birth of Isaac is promised
God tells abraham that Sarah with give birth to a son
Abraham doesn’t believe God, and
Genesis 17:17–19 (ESV)
17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
Sarah doesn’t believe either
PARAPHRASE THIS convo
Genesis 18:13–15 (ESV)
13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” 15 But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
Isaac means “he laughs”
She is my sister, volume 2
She is my sister, volume 2
Gen 20
Abraham and sarah travel to Gerar and Abraham tells the King Abimelech that Sarah is his sister...
Abimelech gets crazy dreams and God keeps every woman in that nation from having children because of Abrahams dishonesty
Birth of Isaac
Birth of Isaac
Finally, at the age of 100 years old, Isaac is born.
25 years on his journey of faith
Obeying God
Failing to trust God
Seeing God come through on his promise
Nothing will grow your faith like seeing God do the supernatural
For Abraham and Sarah, Isaac was that supernatural event
God’s faithfulness
That is where we pick up the story
After these things...
The Test
The Test
Now God would test his faith like never before…God had been preparing Abraham and stretching him, and growing his faith...
2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
Just reading this makes me sick to my stomach. I now have a son. He is 11 weeks old. My only son, CJ, whom I love with all my heart. I can’t even imagine
If God is good, how could he ask Abraham to sacrifice a child?
If God is good, how could he ask Abraham to sacrifice a child?
outcome of the story shows it was never going to happen
Romans 11:33–34 (ESV)
33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord,
or who has been his counselor?”
Isaac represents the most important thing in Abrahams life…Isaac was a gift from God. A promise. The test was asking the question…what in your life are you placing in front of God?
Abraham responds with faith
Abraham responds with faith
3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
Got up early
Cut the wood before they left.
50 mile journey, 3 days
All Abraham knew was that (a)
God made a promise, and planned the future around Isaac, and (b)
God wanted him to sacrifice Isaac.
He could not reconcile the two, but he would obey anyway. That is faith.
I can’t even imagine what those 3 days were like.
Agony, uncertainty, what do you talk about?
4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together.
We see Abrahams faith. We will come again to you.
Even as Isaac asks him the one question he did not want to hear come from his son, Abraham’s faith in God is unwavering
7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
I got emotional several times yesterday reading this over and over again. Faith of Abraham
8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
For Himself, tuck that away for later
Hebrews gives us a deeper understanding of Abrahams faith in God.
Hebrews gives us a deeper understanding of Abrahams faith in God.
Hebrews 11:17–19 ESV
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead
ADonai can do anything
Lord of All. Creator.
If God could give a child to a 100 and 90 year old, he would come through
Rest of the story plays out
9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
Torn between love for his child and obedience to God, Abraham faced agonizing choices. Step by step, faith and hope triumphed over fear and doubt until the knife was raised to slay his son. In this way he showed he was willing to put God’s call above every other commitment and emotional attachment, and at that moment the test ended. He had passed with flying colours.
To fear God means to
To fear God means to
reverence Him as sovereign
Trust him implicitly
obey him without question
JEHOVAH JIREH
JEHOVAH JIREH
14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
only time in scripture where this name of God is used.
God most certainly provides for needs and situations in all of scripture but this instance is where we see it as his idntity, who he is.
Jehovah Jireh Provided the Necessary Sacrifice for Abraham and Isaac
Jehovah Jireh Provided the Necessary Sacrifice for Abraham and Isaac
It is portraying an obedient servant worshiping God in faith at great cost, and in the end receiving God’s provision.
Perfect picture of the gospel.
Bible is telling one story
Jehovah provided the Ram to save Isaac
Jehovah also...
Jehovah Jireh Provided the sacrifice necessary to atone for sin.
Jehovah Jireh Provided the sacrifice necessary to atone for sin.
Mount Moriah, where this takes place. Is actually in Jerusalem, where Solomon will one day build the temple.
in the temple is where atonement for sins would be made
sacrifice and blood of an animal would cover the sins of people, of the children of Israel
Picture of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament
John 1:29 (ESV)
Behold, the Lamb of God
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
John 3:16–17 (ESV)
For God So Loved the World
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Just as Isaac obeyed his father Abraham, so Jesus willingly and obediently laid down his life for you and for me.
John 10:17–18 (ESV)
17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
So they went both of them together.
So they went both of them together.
2x
Father giving up his only son, and a son obeying the will of his father to the end
Abraham gave his only son, Isaac…Isaac obeyed his father to the end
God gave up his only son, Jesus…Jesus obeyed the father to the end.
to atone for my sin, to atone for your sin!
we deserve death, we are not holy as God is holy
but God provided Jesus, the lamb, at the perfect time as the knife is raised over me
Jesus is provided as the substitute for me
Jehovah Jireh Will Provides everything needed for your calling
Jehovah Jireh Will Provides everything needed for your calling
“The Lord will see it” or “The Lord will be seen” or “The Lord will see to it”
“The Lord will see it” or “The Lord will be seen” or “The Lord will see to it”
Believer I don’t know what trial you’re facing, what tragedy you’ve had to deal with, or what calling you’re wrestling with right now.
The Lord sees you, and in that promise He will also be seen, and he will see to it
If we find ourselves facing a great need, because we are following God’s command and will for our life, he will see to it and meet the need.
Philippians 4:19 (ESV)
19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Jehovah Jireh will clear the path, will open the doors,
Jehovah Jireh will see us through if we are only willing to follow wherever he leads
Provide for himself, remember that? If we are called to something,
Plant a church
Be a missionary
Be a spouse or be a parent
teach
share the gospel with your neighbors...
because that’s God’s will. And our calling and purpose is to bring God glory, why do we ever doubt that he will provide for his will?
He will provide for himself.
Matthew 6:25–34 (ESV)
Do Not Be Anxious
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

By Faith
11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
As long as you have breath in your lungs, Jehovah Jireh has purpose for you
He will see to it
The Lord will provide
What a grace, that God would sovereignly use trials and circumstances to grow our faith. To cause us more joy and satisfaction and fulfilment in Him.
He knows exactly what we need, and it’s more of Him.
That’s how we are complete and lacking in nothing, when we are
fully submitted to, satisfied in, and needy for Jehovah Jireh.
