Luke 1-5 Starter Outline
Msg Intro: Luke 1:1-4
God’s plan for mankind involves guiding us to serve the will of God.
In just 2 short chapters we will see the obedience of Zechariah, Elizabeth, John, Mary, Jesus, Joseph, shepherds, Simeon, & Anna. Don’t forget about Gabriel the angel.
TR- Let’s run through the cast in these two chapters.
Body

I. John the Baptist

A. Birth foretold to Zechariah (Luke 1:5-25)

i. Zechariah had prayed/God heard Lu 1:13-14
ii. Elizabeth saw the pregnancy as an answer from God Lu 1:25

B. John’s purpose (Lu 1:14-17; 57-80)Directed people to Jesus, not to themselves.

Key verse: “you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways” v76

C. Opposition to the message (Lu 3:18-20)

II. Jesus of Nazareth

A. Birth foretold to Mary ( Lu 1:26-38)

B. Jesus’ purpose (Lu 1:32)

Salvation to all “the way of peace” 1:79
Jesus didn’t meet their expectations. They wanted military leader.

C. Obedient in baptism (Lu 3:21-22)

III. Mary, mother of Jesus

A. Obedience to God’s call (Lu 1:26-38)

B. Mary’s praise to God (Lu 1:46-56)

Key verse: 37, “for nothing is impossible with God.”

IV. Joseph, step father to Jesus

A. Went home for census (Lu 2:4-5)

B. Went to temple for presentation according to the law (Lu 2:21-24

V. Shepherds (Lu 2:8-20)

A. The shepherds believed God and were obedient (Lu 2:15)

Key idea: God reveals His plans and purposes to us.

VI. Simeon (Lu 2:25-35)

A. God said he would not die until he saw Jesus, Messiah (Lu 2:26)

B. Prophecies regarding Jesus (Lu 2: 29-35)

VII. Anna

When she saw Jesus, she began to thank God and speak to everyone regarding the redemption of Jerusalem. (Lu 2:36-38)

Application Process

1. Good News: The foundation of the new covenant through Jesus is the Gospel

Forgive sins (Lu 5:20)

Grace has no limits (Lu 5:31-32) Call sinners not righteous.

2. Commission: There is always one who goes before Jesus to proclaim the gospel

Commission – Lu 5:10

God calls regular people. (shepherds, fishermen, tax collector)

3. Temptation: The devil will always tempt us to not follow the Lord

Temptation of Jesus (Lu 4:1-13)

Answer? God’s word

4. Obedient Victory:

Commitment - Left everything to follow Him Lu 5:11

Conclusion

Ordinary people, living ordinary lives, God came to them in their day to day lives and invited them to follow Him.
