Savior!

Savior, bet the first thing that comes to your mind is Jesus Christ, right? Well this morning we are going to delve into more about our Savior than just a title we know Him by and have believed and accepted.

Definition of savior

Savior, when you define savior, and I will in just a moment, it is more than just Jesus Christ. A fireman, a policeman, our fighting men and women in our military are saviors. To our youth and children, even your parents are a savior, let me prove it to you. Here is the definition:
1: one that saves from danger or destruction 2: one who brings salvation specifically, capitalized : JESUS sense 1
(Insert Many ways to heaven-danger! picture here)
Maybe you have heard some of these lies
Jesus is one way to get to heaven
All religions lead to heaven
Jews are God’s people; I’m a Jew so I will be in heaven
Can you add to the list? Would you recognize it if someone tried to give you something other than the true Savior?
There is no greater danger in this world and for all eternity then the condemnation that comes because of sin. Sin is a killer (Rom6:23) and unless it is dealt with you will die in them (Jn8:24) because of sin you are separated from God (Isa59:2) - so you need not just a savior, you need the Savior.
(Scriptures referenced in this section: Rom6:23; Jn8:24; Isa59:2; Jn3:18, Jn3:16)
Jesus says, well, let me put it up here, it is pretty clear.
John 8:24 NASB95
24 “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
Sins separate us from God
Isaiah 59:2 NASB95
2 But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.
Sins have a consequence, death, but look God provides a way to have the sin problem taken care of. God provided the Savior.
(insert Rom6_23 wages of sin picture here)
God has judged the world and found it lacking, He has condemned the world because of unbelief. God loved the world and gave the Son (Jn3:16) so to take on the condemnation for those who would believe
John 3:18 NKJV
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
(Transition) so this morning in our Mighty God series we are looking at Jesus: Savior of the world and me too. We will look at
Jesus: Savior of the world
Jesus: claims He is the Savior, the way
The who is saved by Jesus
Me and my Savior
My life with my Savior

Jesus: Savior of the world

Have we established that the world, man, needs saving, needs a Savior? Religious people and non-religious alike need saving from the Savior of the world.
Jesus is the Messiah; Savior of the world (Jn4:7-42)
Let me give the definition from dictionary.com first then move from there. The word messiah is not exclusive.
Messiah: (noun) the promised and expected deliverer of the Jewish people.Jesus Christ, regarded by Christians as fulfilling this promise and expectation. John 4:25, 26.(usually lowercase) any expected deliverer.(usually lowercase) a zealous leader of some cause or project.(italics) an oratorio (1742) by George Frideric Handel.
So, thus far we have seen savior is not exclusive, messiah is not exclusive, but Jesus Savior of the world is, and we are getting there.
Expound on the story of Samaritan woman (Jn4:7-42) - they journey in relationship they had from “you a Jew” (v.9) to prophet (v.19) to comes see is this the Christ (v.29) to many coming to believe Jesus is the Savior of the world (v.42)
Now let me give a few out of this extensive passage
John 4:25–26 NASB95
25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.
Jesus identifies Himself as the Messiah (Jn4:26)
The woman was so moved by the words that she left and went and told others
John 4:28–29 NASB95
28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?”
and the results of the story, well, let’s read it
John 4:39–40 NASB95
39 From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.
John 4:41–42 NASB95
41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.”
From a Jew to Savior of world, the Messiah who was to come, the Christ.
This Jesus, the Creator, Sustainer is also the Savior of the world (Col1:16-17)
Colossians 1:16–17 NASB95
16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
Jesus: Savior to the world sent by the Father to save the world (1Jn4:9-14)
1 John 4:9–10 NASB95
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
1 John 4:11–12 NASB95
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.
1 John 4:13–14 NASB95
13 By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14 We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.
(Insert Father sent the Son picture here)
Sent by the Father that we might live through Him (eternally)
Sent by the Father as the propitiation for sin (satisfaction of God’s wrath)
Sent by the Father that God’s love could be perfected in us
Sent by the Father so we may have the Spirit of the Son to dwell in us so we may testify of Jesus the Savior of the world!

Jesus claim He is the Savior

From the prophesy about the Messiah to the fulfillment, we find it in Jesus Christ the Savior to the world.
I am your Redeemer, your Savior(Isa49:26)
Isaiah 49:26 NASB95
26 “I will feed your oppressors with their own flesh, And they will become drunk with their own blood as with sweet wine; And all flesh will know that I, the Lord, am your Savior And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
I am the Savior, there in on other (Isa43:10-13)
Isaiah 43:10–11 NASB95
10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the Lord, “And My servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and believe Me And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will be none after Me. 11 “I, even I, am the Lord, And there is no savior besides Me.
Isaiah 43:12–13 NASB95
12 “It is I who have declared and saved and proclaimed, And there was no strange god among you; So you are My witnesses,” declares the Lord, “And I am God. 13 “Even from eternity I am He, And there is none who can deliver out of My hand; I act and who can reverse it?”
No other God; no other Savior
no other deliverer
There is no other name, no other way (Act4:12)
Acts 4:12 NASB95
12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
Salvation comes from Savior and Jesus is the Savior of the world in which one must be saved.
Jesus tells you the Way (Jn14:6)
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Point blank, no other name, no other way except through the Son whom the Father sent.
(Transition) So Jesus the Savior of the world, able to save all, but who are the saved? May we look at that next.

Who is saved by Jesus?

Jesus is the Savior, the Redeemer, the Way, available to all, but who is the all who is saved? What is the results of salvation by the Savior?
Note: While the who may be pretty commonly known, I think it is vital we always put this before us and proclaim it so that Jesus the Savior of the world can be believed in and received by the world.
The who:
He who believes (Jn3:15-16)
John 3:15–16 NASB95
15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
He who confesses (Rom10:9-10)
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
He who repents (Mk1:15; Act2:38)
We are familiar with Act2:38; but it did not start there, John preached repentance as did Jesus
Mark 1:15 NASB95
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
He who is baptized (Act2:38; Act22:16)
Acts 22:16 NASB95
16 ‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’
(expand on calling on His name the name of the Savior: Jesus).
The Results of our salvation:
We are redeemed (Gal3:13; 1Pt1:18-19)
Galatians 3:13 NASB95
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—
Redeemed! - oh we needed it and our redemption was made possible through the blood of the lamb who became a curse for us.
1 Peter 1:18–19 NASB95
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
We are sanctified (1Cor1:2, 6:11)
1 Corinthians 1:2 NASB95
2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
Sanctified in Christ Jesus our Savior, our Redeemer!
1 Corinthians 6:11 NASB95
11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
Sanctified and justified in the name of Jesus and in the Spirit! Speaking of justification:
We are justified (Rom3:24, 5:1)
Romans 3:24 NASB95
24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
Justification a gift of God’s grace!
Romans 5:1 NASB95
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Justification that happens by faith and results in peace with God, all through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
We are called to be righteousness (2Cor5:21)
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Let this verse sink it, contemplate it, really, look at it again. God the Father who so loved the world gave His Son to become sin on our behalf, so we might become the righteousness of God through Jesus!
We are called to be holy (1Pt1:15-16)
1 Peter 1:15–16 NASB95
15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
He did not just save us, be our Savior to do nothing, but to be able to be righteousness, to be holy
HOLY (adj) dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose; sacred.
Jesus the Savior of the world gives all grace, and peace (Tit1:4)
Titus 1:4 NASB95
4 To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
Grace and peace from the Father and from Jesus Christ!

Me and my Savior!

Jesus, Savior of the world is just that because it starts with the person first. It’s the me before it is the we!
God wants all to be saved (1Tim2:3-4)
1 Timothy 2:3–4 NASB95
3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
God’s will, God’s desire, for all to be saved; and that all starts with the one being saved.
1 Timothy 4:9–10 NASB95
9 It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance. 10 For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.
(expand on all men, especially believers)
There is the examples of Mary (Lk1:46-47), Simeon (Lk2:26, 29-30) (implied) and David (2Sam22:3-4 that speak of personal Savior
Luke 1:46–47 NASB95
46 And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord, 47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
With Simeon he was to see the Lord’s Christ (Savior, redeemer)
Luke 2:26 NASB95
26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
then he said
Luke 2:29–30 NASB95
29 “Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace, According to Your word; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation,
Now with David check this out
2 Samuel 22:3–4 NASB95
3 My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My savior, You save me from violence. 4 “I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies.
Point to ponder: So in the midst of times of rejoicing (Simeon; Mary), or in times of struggle (David) He is your Savior, your Redeemer, your Friend if you believe in Him.
(Invitation slide-My Lord and My Savior)
Is He your Savior? Do you take refuge in Him?
Is He your Savior who washed away your sins?
Is He your Savior that you share with others so they too can be saved?
Are you doing good deeds? No greater deed can we do than to share our Jesus, our Savior, our Redeemer, our Friend with others
