Advent = Arrival
A time of preparation. Preparing our hearts for the Messiah.
A time to pause, consider, and celebrate.
God’s Faithfulness
God’s Faithfulness
v. 1 to v. 2 to v. 3 to vv. 4-5
God would do whatever it would take.
vv. 10-11
It wasn’t God who forced their rebellion, but He allowed discipline.
But, He also brought them back.
God’s New Covenant
God’s New Covenant
v. 3 - Unconditional
v. 3 - Unconditional
“From far away.”
Our sin has moved us away, not God. “God seems so distant!”
Yet, He loves us, in spite of our rebellion.
We don’t have to fix ourselves first.
He loves us enough to bring us to Himself.
v. 10 - Good Shepherd
v. 10 - Good Shepherd
2 Things Jesus tells us about the Good Shepherd:
Pursues the lost
Lays down His life
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
v. 11 - The Cost
v. 11 - The Cost
Ransom = A payment for freedom
Redeem = To gain in exchange
Our sin created an infinite debt “from hands too strong.”
Only Christ could pay it.
He gave up His life to pay so that we could be ransomed, freed!
v. 13 - Compassion
v. 13 - Compassion
Too often people think of religion as something that just leads to guilt.
Faith in Christ leads us from conviction to compassion.
It is a weight lifted.
Sin has a negative effect - emotional, physical, spiritual
Faith in Jesus replaces that with compassion.
Because of the cross.
Conclusion
Conclusion
As a kid, most mornings I would want to sleep. But not Christmas!
Excitement for gifts each Christmas morning.
When Christ came, He brought love.
The greatest gift we could ever receive.
Salvation.
