What shall I render unto the Lord
For all his benefits toward me?
I will take the cup of salvation,
And call upon the name of the Lord.
I will pay my vows unto the Lord
Now in the presence of all his people.
I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And will call upon the name of the Lord.
Let's Not Overlook Thanksgiving Day
INTRODUCTION:
Thanksgiving Day in America is a holiday of national observance Of all the days of the year it is welcomed with a large degree of participation.
Then families gather for reunion; then churches are full of worshippers; then a nation stops its busy life to remember and give thanks.
A RECOGNITION OF GOD
This is the supreme object in thanksgiving.
No life is wealthy if God is left out.
We are not impoverished or made poor if life is God-centered and controlled.
The Pilgrim Fathers, in 1620, settling on the New England shore.
They knew that they had been divinely fortunate, brought across the ocean by God's guiding hand.
They decided to set apart some time for recollection and thanksgiving.
Should we who are christian be likeminded....
This is no pagan holiday, but consecrated declared sacred unto common things of life to God.
Primarily, it is a day of worship toward God.
A RECEPTION OF BLESSINGS
Blessings cannot be numbered.
Consider the "blessednesses" of life (Ps. 1).
Blessed is the man
That walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor standeth in the way of sinners,
Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord;
And in his law doth he meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,
That bringeth forth his fruit in his season;
His leaf also shall not wither;
And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
The ungodly are not so:
But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous:
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
The godly life knows this to be true, and the natural man may well ponder what he has found of life.
Note the areas of reception by us:
Consider our national blessings.
Some lands have no liberty or freedom of conscience.
Here the Bible is circulated, worship is unmolested, and freedom of speech is ours.
Think of our church blessings.
This is the larger family which meets on this day.
Public worship with praise, prayer, reading, sermon, and fellowship inspire us.
Reflect upon our individual blessings.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all his benefits:
Health, mental powers, moral and spiritual insight, personal and family joys.
A RENDERING OF THANKS. BUT "HOW?"
The psalmist gives answer for us:
"I will take the cup ..."
Was this the drink offering of ancient ritual?
This sacrifice of thanksgiving is not in singing hymns but the dedication of life.
