Jeremiah 31:31–34 KJV 1900
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, That I will make a new covenant With the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers In the day that I took them by the hand To bring them out of the land of Egypt; Which my covenant they brake, Although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, And write it in their hearts; And will be their God, And they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For they shall all know me, From the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: For I will forgive their iniquity, And I will remember their sin no more.
Pre-Sermon Ice Breaker: A duck, a skunk and deer went out for dinner at a restaurant one night. When it came time to pay, the skunk didn’t have a scent, the deer didn’t have a buck, so they put the meal on the duck’s bill.
Introduction

I. Have you ever had to renegotiate a contract?

· That is sort of what we find here in Jeremiah 31.
· God had made a contract with Israel, but Israel had failed to keep up their part of the deal. So God makes a new deal. Strangely enough the deal is better, than the old one. And you and I are the beneficiaries of this New Covenant.

II. Review of our Series

· Reading through the Old Testament in 2020
· So far we have looked at Jeremiah 9, and last week we looked at Jeremiah 33:3
· Today we actually take a step back. Today is a special day: we are celebrating the Lord’s Supper and we are witnessing the Baptism of Rochelle. And it seemed appropriate to commemorate these events with a message that embraced these important themes.

III. A look at our text

· The Old Testament has made frequent mention of the covenant God has made with his people.
· First with Abraham, then Isaac and Jacob. It continued to Moses, followed by Joshua and then to David and his seed.
· But now God makes a new covenant.
· Sometimes contracts can be hard to understand. But God makes three declarations that clearly outline where understanding can be found. Let’s look at the terms together.

I. The New Covenant is found in the Heart

Jeremiah 31:33 KJV 1900
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, And write it in their hearts; And will be their God, And they shall be my people.
Ezekiel 36:26 KJV 1900
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

II. The New Covenant is Found in the Mind

Jeremiah 31:34 KJV 1900
And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For they shall all know me, From the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: For I will forgive their iniquity, And I will remember their sin no more.
John 17:3 KJV 1900
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
1 John 5:20 KJV 1900
And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

III. The New Covenant is Found in Forgiveness

Isaiah 43:25 KJV 1900
I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, And will not remember thy sins.
Hebrews 10:16–17 KJV 1900
This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

Conclusion

So here is the deal
John 1:12 KJV 1900
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
It is as easy as A,B,C.
Let’s pray.
