Introduction

Be finding in your Bibles the book of 1 Peter 1:10-12.
So far, throughout our journey in 1 Peter, we have been surveying a wonderful message of hope. Not just a hope in the sense that we think of hope concerning worldly things, but a living hope. We will see today the basis of that living hope as we dive into our next message in the series of 1 Peter and speak on this topic: The Promise of Our Salvation.
As we discussed last week, Peter has written this letter to a people that has been severely persecuted because of their stand for Christ. They are beaten and broken and Peter feels that he needs to write unto them to encourage their belief. In the opening of his letter, Peter begins to address the most important topic of discussion concerning their newfound faith in Christ, by speaking to their God-given gift of grace. He speaks to their salvation.
Over the past two weeks, we have discussed the purpose of our salvation. Peter began his teachings from the thought process of explaining not only the source of our salvation, but also the scope of it. Peter is asking his audience to shift their minds to the future. Do not dwell on your current persecution, but rather a future restoration. Our salvation is possible because of a prophecy that Christ fulfilled, and can be trusted because of prophecy that is yet to be fulfilled. The story has already been written in full, but has yet to be fully played out. I truly believe that we are in the closing chapters of the Book, but the Book has not been closed yet. Therefore, we must rely heavily on what the previous chapters have had to say, so that we can make it to the final pages.
This is where Peter takes us today. We have been told to dwell on the promises of the future, but for these folks, their future hasn’t been to promising. Peter now wants to show us how promising, and trustworthy, our future really is, based upon our past. Peter turns to the scripture, and the writers of it, to bring this point across.
