Start out with Cheap Grace
Paul has been making his case for justification by faith- that is you and I can be made righteous through faith in Christ
Last week we looked at what is wrong with us, and just by way of review to see how many of you were paying attention last week, how many people in here this morning are ungodly?
For the rest of you lieing is a very ungodly thing to do
We are in trouble because we are ungodly- Ungodly means to be unlike God. You say well no one is perfect, yes that is what it means to be ungodly
We are ungodly because of who we are kin too: Adam
We are born into sin and that sin starts showing up around two years old
In Ellies case it has showed up a little before two, there has been a couple times when Ellie for no reason has bitten both myself and her mother… What is that? I tell you what it is, it is SIN
Where did she get that ungodly nature, from her parents, where did they get it from, their parents, and we can trace it all the way back to Adam
When we are born we are in Adam, his sin, his condemnation, his depravity passed down to us
And remember how Paul used Sin… its not a verb, he uses it as a noun
Its not just actions it is a power that is at work
In Fact in Romans 5 he uses the word Reign several times
Romans 5: 14- Yet Death Reigned from Adam to Moses
Romans 5:17 - Because of Ones mans Trespass, death reigned
Romans 5:21- Sin Reigned in death
So Paul speaks of sin as being a power, and more than just a power, but actually a law that is at work within us, constantly dominating us
Remember Paul saying: LAW OF SIN
22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.
But He is about to introduce another law that supercedes the Law of Sin and death, An dit is the Law of Grace… Actually in Romans 8 :2 Paul calls it the law of the Spirit of life
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
And just as sin reigned in us when we were seperated from Christ, Paul saus that Grace can reign in us now!!!
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Now like I said last week, many of you have been trying to fix you for a long time! But you cannot seem to get over the hump. And you agree with Paul in Romans
18 And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. 19 I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. 20 But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
And Paul is in despair! Oh, wretched man that I am.... WHAT will deliver me from this body of death?
Is that what he says… What will deliver me?
Isnt that what we are always asking? What new practice or habit can I put into place to deliver me? What book can I read to deliver me?
He asks the question of Who? Who will deliver me
You see don’t you stop at verse 24 and live with the lie that nothing or no one can deliver you, you have to go on to verse 25, Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!!
What is CHEAP GRACE?
What is CHEAP GRACE?
We have been taught so long that being saved is just about going to heaven one day.
The reason that is taught is because freedom is hard, you have to fight for it, you have to have repentance in your life
And so Paul is preaching grace, Paul is preaching justification through faith in Christ...
But that brings up another issue.... the issue of what I am going to call cheap grace.
But that brings up another issue.... the issue of what I am going to call cheap grace.
..... And So Paul says that where sin abounded grace abounded much more
..... And So Paul says that where sin abounded grace abounded much more
Quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
“Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession...Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.”
CHeap Grace has been taught for such a long time that many within the church have quietly wondered has Jesus lost his power to set the captive free.
And Paul begins this section in Romans 6 with that same question do you not know?
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
Now Paul is not confused on how you can be a Christian and not sin
Most of you are like listen follow me I can show yyou how you can do it!
I know how you do it
What I am asking you is Why?
Why would you continue bowing down to a master that is no longer your master?
He is asking for those of you that have been freed from the power of sin, why are you continuing in it
Why are you still allowing a spirit of lust to dominate you
Why are you still allowing idolatry to rule you
Why are you still conducting yourself thsat way, why is cursing still flowing out of your mouth
Why are you still allowing a lying tongue to speak out of your mouth
Why would you keep saying yes to a master that is no longer your master
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
He asks didn’t you know
You see we have been taught cheap grace and mistaken identity in church today
Most of us have been taught that we are just a low down dirty sinner, a scum sucking dog as Jerry Payne likes to put it,
And Paul asks the question or dont yu know, because many people don’t know,
Don’t you know that there is more than I just get to go to heaven one day when I die? In fact I will say something that is going to blow youyr minds, the Bible doesnt teach that Jesus died on the cross so that you dont go to hell. The Bible teaches that jesus died oin the cross to destroy the power of sin over your life
And that the image of Adam can be done awya with when you recieve Christ and God begins a new work in you, to recreate the image of God within you
And maybe
2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
So he says don't you know that we were baptized into Christs death, to which you respond I still don't know that.... What in the world is he talking about?
When we think of baptise we think of water baptism, or sprinkling of water
And certainly water baptism pictures this, but he is using baptism in a general sense to just mean to be immersed into something
to put something into something
MOVE OVER ADAM TO CHRIST ILLUSTRATION
Dont you know that you were moved over from Adam to Christ
What he is saying is that what was true of Adam was true of you. may have not been fair but it is true
You were lost, you were separated from God, dominated by the reigning undisputed Heavy weight power of Sin
But What Paul is saying is that that heavy weight champion Got Knocked the heck out by the Contender- The Lord Jesus Christ
And what Paul is saying is tht just as it was true that what was true of Adam was true of you, but when you surrender your life to Jesus, that what is true of Jesus is true of you.
Child of God
His power and authority over the powers of darkness, over evil spirits
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Highlight “Just as Christ” and We too might walk in newness of life
Walking refers to action- you see its not just having the Bible knowledge but you practice what you preach
the death of Christ and the Resurrection and all that went along with it is true of you because you are in Christ
Escaping hell is just part of the gospel, you escape condemnation but everything that is true of Christ is true of you
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.
Once you die you will be free
The Old Self - you in Adam
and we have been crucified with Christ- but you are in Christ, therefore you were crucified. The reason you can
i know longer have to say yes to sin because I am no longer a slave to it
Like you don't know how strong the lure of sin, yes I do know, but what Paul says is that
11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
We need to say this all the time… Sin is not my master
Talk about not being conformed to the World
I am going to reading out of the New Living Translation today
6 We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. 7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.
No longer slaves to sin-
no I am just not going to do that anymore. i am just not going to conduct myself that way anymore, talk that way anymore.... Why becaus ei am dead
Do you know what causes so many problems in marriages today, in failed expectations… We don’t have enough dead people in church anymore.... Because dead people dont have any more rights to anything. They don’t have to fight for their right to be happy, they don’t have to fight for their right to
Now when I say dead people… I dont mean that there is no life, its only when we are dead to self that we can have the life of Christ beaming inside. No the problem is we are very much alive to sin
11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
The King James uses the word reckon instead of consider....
reckon : as a result of a calculation evaluate, estimate
reckon : as a result of a calculation evaluate, estimate
As you know, you consider, you Present get those three words deep down in your heart becasue they are the secrets to victory
As grace abounds, Righteousness will also aboundand that imputed righteousness will become imparted righteousness
Now you know- THEMORE YOU KNOW
To Know V 6
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
This word Know deals with your identitfication with jesus.
We are identified with Jesus, what he does we woill do. What victory belongs to him belongs to us. And when you know who you are the devil will have a hard time getting you to slink back down into the gutter
Because jesus died, my old life also died, because he is alive, I too am know alive with him. His righteousness is my righteousness, his power is now my power, His authority is now my authority. I am a child of God
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
When a man dies having broken the law, it doesnt really matter what kind of case they are compiling here, hes dead.
If you are a slave, and the master tells you when to wake, when to work, what to eat and how to act well you haveto obey because that person is your master. But when you die the master no longer has any authority.
Our old master the devil, sin and the flesh dont have any more control because we are now dead. When Christ died we in a sense also died with him.
Now, in Bible times, when a man would die, or a woman would die, the dead were put quickly out of sight. They were buried. Now, why does the Bible say not only did we die with Jesus, we were buried with Jesus? Because, you see, Jesus carried our sins into the grave of God’s forgetfulness. The devil would love to intimidate you with the bones of your old life, but your sins are in the grave of God’s forgetfulness, and when Satan comes looking for the old CJ, he says, Where’s my buddy CJ? I haven’t seen him in a while. Well, he’s dead. Satan, you don’t have any more power over him. Well, where’s his body? I want to torment it. You can’t torment it; it is buried, it, it is gone.
Christians are just nice people they are new creations
Adrian Rogers Sermon Archive I. Know
Augustine, for whom the city of St. Augustine is named, was a profligate, a sinful young man; he lived wild and wicked. He had a mother that was praying for him. Her name was Monica. One day, Augustine got saved, and he was walking down the street after having met the Lord, and a prostitute saw him. He saw the prostitute first, and she was a woman that he’d consorted with. And it was a part of that old life. So Augustine just ducked his head, crossed the street, put his head down, and began to walk—didn’t want to say a word to her. She recognized him, and she said, Augustine, Augustine, it is I. He said, Yes, but it is not I, and kept on walking. What he meant by that was the old Augustine was dead. I’ve been raised to walk in a new life.
Consider Verse 11
11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
The first word Knowing deals with our identification with the Lord jesus the second word 4, Consider, or the King James uses the word reckon has to do with our appropriation of the Lord jesus Christ
The Word is a book keeping term, means to count on it or calculate it
Now this word consider does not mean to close your eyes and hope its so, or pretending its true, but by faith appropriating what you know to be true. that is these truths now belong to kyou. You know know your identity, now Consider is operating in alignment to that identity
3. if you go to the bank and they give you a reciept with a certain cash amount on it, it doesnt matter how you feel about it, it is the truth about what you have in the bank
We need to get our salvation out of the realm of shallow emotions
So we Know that our old man has been crucified that is it is already done two thousand years ago.
but now I must Consider, i must reckon myself dead to sin, day by nday moment by moment knowing that not only did jesus give himself for me two thousand years ago, but day by day moment by moment the Lord is steadily giving me his life to appropriate to practive what hes placed within me
Present Verse 13
13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.
Knowing deals with identification, Consider deals with Appropriation and the final word is Present and its deals with Emancipation. The lord has signed the emancipation of Proclamation, our freedom from sin. He gave himself for us , that he might give himself to us that He might live in us. I in him and he in me, the Life of Christ living through my body but I must yield, I must present myself before him
