Isaiah 9:6 KJV 1900
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
This morning, we are studying Isaiah’s writing predicting the coming of the “Counselor” (Isaiah 9:6), he was spurring Israel to remember their Messiah was indeed coming to establish His Kingdom (Isaiah 9:7).
Isaiah was writing nearly 800 years before Christ. This period of history was tumultuous as the Assyrians were on the march, taking people into captivity by droves. Isaiah’s prophecy gave the people of God a hope they so desperately needed: a Child would be born to fulfill the Davidic Covenant, and He would bear the titles “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” The Child was Christ; the prophecy will reach its consummation at Christ’s second coming.
In using these nouns and names, Isaiah is indicating the kind of character this coming King has.
The word wonderful in this passage literally means “incomprehensible.” The Messiah will cause us to be “full of wonder.” The word is much weightier than the way it’s used in normal conversation today—we say things are “wonderful” if they are pleasant, lovely, or the least bit likable. Jesus is wonderful in a way that is boggling to the mind. The same word for “wonderful” is used in Judges 13:18 when Manoah, Samson’s father, asked the LORD (in a theophany) what His name was. The angel of the LORD responded, “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?” In other words, “Why do you ask my name, since it is beyond your understanding?”
Jesus demonstrated His wonderfulness in various ways when He was on the earth, beginning with His conception in the womb of a virgin (Matthew 1:23), to being the Son of God, to being Fully God and Fully Man.
This morning we will look at the Messiah’s title, counselor. In ancient Israel, a counselor was portrayed as a wise king, such as Solomon, giving guidance to his people (1 Kings 4:34; Micah 4:9). Isaiah uses this word again in Isaiah 28:29 to describe the LORD: “This also comes from the LORD of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.” Jesus is a wise counselor. “He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person” (John 2:25). He is able to advise His people thoroughly because He is qualified in ways no human counselor is. In Christ is “hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3), including the knowledge of all human nature (Psalm 139:1–2).
Today, I want you to know that Jesus always knows what we are going through, and He always knows the right course of action (Hebrews 4:15–16).
Look with me at Hebrews 4:12-16
Hebrews 4:12–16 KJV 1900
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. 14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Omniscience - Contemplates Your Path

Omniscience. God’s infinite knowledge and understanding of things past, present, and future.
This verse deals expressly with the idea of judgment. It reminds men that God keeps a perfect record and will, one day, execute swift, accurate judgment, Rev. 20:11–15. However, the same attribute that allows God to see all the evil deeds of the wicked, also permits him to observe the steps of His children.

Christ is Watching

The eyes of the Lord miss nothing—
Proverbs 15:3 KJV 1900
3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Beholding the evil and the good.
Matthew 10:29–30 KJV 1900
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
The Disciples in the storm. They were struggling, but Jesus saw it all—
Mark 6:48 KJV 1900
48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
1. He sees your Trials.
2. He sees your Temptations.
3. He sees your Tears,
Psalm 56:8 MEV
8 You take account of my wandering; put my tears in Your bottle; are they not in Your book?

Christ is Working

Psalm 37:23 KJV 1900
23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: And he delighteth in his way.
Proverbs 16:9 KJV 1900
9 A man’s heart deviseth his way: But the Lord directeth his steps.
Regardless of where life leads, be sure that God is still in control of all that happens—
Romans 8:28 KJV 1900
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Joseph—
Genesis 50:20 KJV 1900
20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.
Ruth—
Ruth 2:3 KJV 1900
3 And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.
There is no such thing as coincidence in the life of the child of God.
There is only providence!

Christ is Waiting

Everything God does in your life, or allows to happen your life, is simply His way of maturing you into the image of His Son Jesus—
Ephesians 4:13 KJV 1900
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
God’s desire is that we decrease that He might increase!
Hebrews 4:15 KJV 1900
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Omnipresence - Considers Your Pain

Omnipresence. Aspect of God’s infinity in which he transcends the limitations of space and is present in all places at all times.

Christ is Waken

Stephen—
Acts 7:55–56 KJV 1900
55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
Saul—He had persecuted many Christians, but Jesus felt their pain—
Acts 9:4 KJV 1900
4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
Just as He felt the pain of those people, He feels your pain this morning. When you have a need in your life, Heaven is moved to take care of it. Jesus knows what you feel and He loves you. When you hurt, He hurts!

Christ is Wonted

Familiar, Accustomed
Some may ask, “How can Jesus know what I am going through? He is perfect and way off up in Heaven. How can He possible feel what I feel?” He is able to know what humans feel because He has lived life as a human and has experienced the same hardships that you face today.
1. He Understands Temptation—Matt. 4:4–11 (Ill. The nature of His temptations—1 John 2:16. Jesus was tempted in all the same areas where we are tempted today.) (Ill. His temptations may have been more severe because of the fact that He was sinless.
You see, Jesus was not only sinless, but He was, and is, incapable of sinning! He has a hatred and repugnance for sin that few of us can imagine. Therefore, coming face to face with sin was a horrible event for Jesus.) He can help you when you are tempted.
2. He Understands Rejection—(Ill. John 6:66; Matt. 27:46–64) He knows what it is like to have the world turn its back on you. In fact, He knows what it is like to face something that no one in this room will ever experience, if you are saved. He knows what it is like to have God turn His back to you—Matt. 27:46. He endured these things so that He might help you when you face a time of need in your own life.
3. He Understands Poverty And Need—(Ill. Matt. 8:20; Ill. Tax money—Matt. 17:24–27.) Jesus knows what it is like when the ends won’t meet no matter how far you stretch them. He understands need and is able to offer help during those tough times.
4. He Understands Grief—(Ill. John 11:35; Luke 19:41) Jesus knows exactly what it is like to lose someone you love. Therefore, He can help you when you face those times of loss. Jesus understands human heartbreak.
5. He Understands Loneliness—(Ill. Matt. 26:39; Matt. 27:46) He knows what it is like to have no one around Him who understands what He is going through. He knows what it means to hurt alone and He knows how to help you through those troubled times of loneliness also.
Hebrews 4:16 KJV 1900
16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Omnipotence - Conquers your Problems

Omnipotence. God’s unlimited authority to bring into existence or cause to happen whatsoever he wills.

You Wise up

The Lord gives man an open invitation to come unto Himself for help to get through life. (Why is it that He who should be our first resort is often our last? We are so guilty of trying everything else before we seriously seek help from the Lord. We will try worry, pity, self-effort, etc, then when everything else fails us, we will run to Jesus and look to Him for the help we could have received a long while before.) Here is God’s plan for you in trouble—
Philippians 4:6–7 KJV 1900
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 5:7 KJV 1900
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

You Win

Mercy -

Mercy and compassion denote care, concern, and empathetic feeling for another person. In the Bible, mercy and compassion are most perfectly demonstrated and characterized by God’s own merciful and loving care for his people, and in particular by the gift of mercy through Jesus Christ.

Grace -

The resulting activity that is a necessary consequence of genuine, beneficent goodwill; especially used of the outworking of God’s goodwill.
2 Corinthians 12:9 KJV 1900
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Matthew 11:28 KJV 1900
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Hebrews 4:12 KJV 1900
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Conc: Have you been tempted lately to “lose faith?”
Does it seem that the load you are called to bear just gets too heavy at times?
Maybe Satan, or foolish people have encouraged you to give up.
Don’t give up, come to Jesus! He is ready, willing and able to give you all that you need to get you through whatever you are faced with this evening. If you will trust Jesus with your problem, by faith, He will never fail you! Is there something you need to bring to Jesus right now? If so, just come and let Him have His way in your life. He is all you will ever need!
