Psalm 2:1–12 ESV
1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

The Rebellion

Psalm 2:1–3 ESV
1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.”

The Agitated Question ‘Why!?’

All the Rage

The Nations and Peoples, The Kings and Rulers
Rage - Commotion/Tumult/Disturbance/Noise
Plot - Murmur, talk in low tones, scheming
Want to Break Bonds/Shackles and Remove chains or ropes
Mary Mary - but wrong shackles
All in Vain

They are rebelling against the LORD and His Anointed

Bonds and Cords are identified as their bonds and their cords
the relationship between them
the attack of one equals an attack of both
King and Priests
In this case a King, a King that is not like the other rulers and kings that are setting themselves and plotting
Hebrew Word/Greek Word
The Complete Word Study Dictionary: Old Testament 4899. מָשִׁיחַ māšiyaḥ

מָשִׁיחַ māšiyaḥ

Means to smear or the one who is smeared. Done as a means to denote that someone has been set apart for a purpose, someone who has been chosen to carry out a task.

Μεσσίας Messías

The transliteration of the hebrew “anointed” in the Greek (much like the transliterated word ‘baptidzo’ to ‘baptize’ from Greek to English.

Χριστός Christós

John 1:41 ESV
41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
John 4:25 ESV
25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.”
Matthew 2:4 ESV
4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
Mark 8:29 ESV
29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.”
Davidic Anointed pointed forward to the ultimate fulfillment of the messiah in none other than Jesus the Christ.
Peter summed this up perfectly in the New Testament period, where after their release and reuniting with the other disciples Peter and John proclaim
Acts 4:24–28 ESV
24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “ ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’— 27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.

The King in Heaven

Psalm 2:4–6 ESV
4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”

There is one enthroned in heaven

The Sovereignty of God
Ephesians 1:11 ESV
11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
He laughs at Kings and Rulers of Earth / He mocks, scoffs and derides them (1 Cor 1:20)
1 Corinthians 1:20 ESV
20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
Speaks in His Wrath / Terrifies in his fury

My King, My Holy Hill

The LORD has set His Place
Zion - Couple of Things
A Place
Stronghold/fortress of the Jebusites conquered by David
Temple Mount where Solomon moved the Ark of the Covenant - The Dwelling Place of God
The City of Jerusalem
A People
Those who Bless the LORD
The Daughters of Zion
The Sons of Zion

Once the name of a ridge in pre-Davidic Jerusalem, it had now become a designation for the people of Israel themselves, though without having shed its spatial reference.

The Holy Place
Chosen by the LORD
Set apart by the LORD - Holy
The LORD has set His King
The Davidic Covenant (2 Sam 7:1-16)
2 Samuel 7:16 ESV

Forever means forever - what about Israel after the fall of Judah Enthroned King
The LORD fulfilled his promise until Judah’s Captivity and after
Jesus Fulfills this Role Now
Jesus a king forever (Heb 1:8-9) - fulfilling the covenant of David
Hebrews 1:8–9 ESV

Recognized as the Anointed One - From Time

The LORD’s King on Earth

Psalm 2:7–9 ESV
7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

The Anointed One Speaks

You are my Son
Said of the Kings of the Davidic Line (2 Sam 7:14)
2 Samuel 7:14 ESV
14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,
Also see what is said concerning Solomon
1 Chronicles 28:6 ESV
6 He said to me, ‘It is Solomon your son who shall build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.
Christ all the more
The Father spoke this of the Son, recorded in the Gospels.
Luke 3:22 ESV
22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
The Father spoke this on the Mount of Transfiguration
Matthew 17:5 ESV
5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
The author of Hebrews cites the Son as the: (Heb 1:1-4)
one appointed heir to all things
the heir of all things
the creator of the world
the radiance of the glory of God
the exact imprint of his nature
upholding the universe by the word of his power
the one who made purification for sins
the one who sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on High
the one to whom God said “You are my Son, today I have begotten you” to show that that Son is:
greater than the Angels
Hebrews 1:5 ESV
5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”?
greater than the High Priest
Hebrews 5:5 ESV
5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;

The Rule to the Ends of the Earth

The whole of the earth has always been God’s plan, from Genesis
Genesis 1:27–28 ESV
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
To Abraham and the blessing of all the families of the earth
Genesis 12:3 ESV
3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
The rule of the King of the LORD, would fall the same way. The king would be one to rule and ruling in line with God would mean that he would rule rightly. That King was not David or Solomon, eventhough Israel greatly prospered during that time, it was not with Jehoiachin, Jotham or Hezekiah.
Matter of fact God’s people looked for, yearned for that king that would fulfill what God had intended. The king who would rule all, who would bring peace who would bring prosperity for eternity. The one who would fulfill Davidic Covenant.
As the king, the son and begotten of God, he rules. He rules with authority and he rules with a scepter (a rod of iron). That is used with force as needed against those who are against the rule of the king and ultimately the LORD.
Jesus defeated the rebellion by conquering death and the grave, yet those who love Him are still waiting for the peace that accompanies the Messiah, that accompanies the King of the LORD. Where those who oppose the LORD and His Anointed are forever put into their place, with the iron rod as dashed pottery.
That one is Jesus on His Second Advent, His Second Coming, His Parousia. For Jesus will be the one with the iron rod as it says in Revelation:
Revelation 2:27 ESV
27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father.
and
Revelation 12:5 ESV
5 She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne,

Respond to the King

Psalm 2:10–12 ESV
10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Therefore

Those in charge regardless of where or when respond as expected ...
Because of who the LORD is
Because of who the Anointed One is
Because of who the King is
Do these commands (Imperatives)
Be Wise - Act Prudently, pay attention and behave accordingly. Not as one who rebels against the LORD and His Anointed. Without the stance against and the plotting, submitting to the LORD, through submitting to His appointed King
Be Warned - Respond because of the impending wrath and terror that accompanies anyone that is not inline with the LORD and His Anointed.
Serve with Fear -
Rejoice with Trembling -

Kiss the Son

Kiss the Son
Show the honor that is due to the Son
Show the homage that is due to the Son
In the case of the Davidic King, because of His appointment by the LORD
In the case of our Lord Jesus, because
He paid a price that we could not pay,
He lived a life that we could not live,
He was raised as the firstfruits as our hope
He has all authority
He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords
