Chapter 1 Summary

Live in between 2 identities (1:1)
1 Peter 1:1 ESV
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

Elect (1:3-5)

1 Peter 1:3–5 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Exiles (1:6-7)

1 Peter 1:6–7 ESV
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Prepare for action (1:13)

1 Peter 1:13 ESV
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
[slide]
“Gird up the loins of your mind”
[slide]
“Check yourself before you wreck yourself”
[slide]
“Take a step back and examine your actions, because you are in a potentially dangerous or sticky situation that could get bad very easily. Often in a harmful manner.”

1 Peter 1:13 ESV
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Set your hope fully on Jesus’ grace

As obedient children (1:14)

1 Peter 1:14 ESV
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,
1. Obey out of identity (child of God)
2. Do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance

Conduct yourselves with fear (1:17)

1 Peter 1:17–19 ESV
And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
Why? Knowing you were ransomed with the blood of Christ (1:19)

Through the gospel, our love ought to be different (1:22)

Why? The gospel. (1:24-25)
1 Peter 1:24–25 ESV
for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

Chapter 2

1 Peter 2:1 ESV
So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.

SO… (2:1)

So… or Therefore … or Because...
Because you’re elect
Because you’re exiles
Because you’re prepared for action
Because you’re children of the most high God
Because you’re conducting yourself with fear know you’ve been ransomed by the blood of Jesus
Because you’re love ought to look different
Because the word of the Lord, the gospel was preached to you
1 Peter 2:1 ESV
So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.
Put away, get rid of
5 sins that will divide the church
Jesus loves his church, his bride, he ransomed his life to purchase it
Church is a big deal, be together, strive together...
There is no room for the gospel AND these divisive sins

Malice

You can’t wish ill towards another believer
But they’re unloveable (yep…)

Deceit

Jesus came to bear witness to the truth proclaiming that the truth would set you free
Satan has been a liar from the beginning and is the father of lies
You may be feeling “I got this one covered, I don’t lie to church members...”
Refer back to 1:14
1 Peter 1:14 ESV
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,
Ephesians 4:22 ESV
to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

THE WORLD IS LYING TO YOU

GIVE EXAMPLES
Ephesians 4:25 ESV
Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.
What is the truth?
Wings like eagles...
Isaiah 40:28 ESV
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
Isaiah 40:29 ESV
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Isaiah 40:30 ESV
Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted;
Isaiah 40:31 ESV
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
As far as the east is from the west...
Psalm 103:8 ESV
The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
Psalm 103:9 ESV
He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever.
Psalm 103:10 ESV
He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.
Psalm 103:11 ESV
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
Psalm 103:12 ESV
as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
Psalm 103:13 ESV
As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
Taste and see...
Psalm 34:8 ESV
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Psalm 34:9 ESV
Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack!
Psalm 34:10 ESV
The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
[slide]
If we can’t tell the truth to each other, how do we expect to tell the truth to the world?

Hypocrisy

1. Sermon on the mount… The Pharisees were the kings of the hypocrites
2. Blessed are the poor in spirit...
3. There is a genuine unity that comes through a right understanding of our desperate condition for God.

Envy

Discontentment
Wanting what others have

Slander

To hurl accusations puts you in league with Satan
The book of Revelation calls Satan “the accuser of the brothers”
[the whole list]
1 Peter 2:1 ESV
So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.
Jesus cares about unity in the church
Church is not an individual activity
[next verse]
1 Peter 2:2 ESV
Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—
Long for pure spiritual milk (2:2)
That you may grow up into salvation
1. Emphasis on “newborn” or born just now...
2. Our desire for the God’s word should be one of helpless desperation, if I don’t get this, I’m not going to make it
3. Pure spiritual milk is the word of God… you must be drinking it up...
4. into salvation… you are being renewed, restored, sanctified, made holy (set apart)
[next verse]
1 Peter 2:3 ESV
if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
We get a taste now, but a feast is coming
Our soul longs to be satisfied, and mankind has be searching high and low for thousands of years.
