INTRO: Into the Serries

How the culture is ignoring Christ
Luke 2:1–7 NLT
At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child. And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.
The Birth of Jesus! The Incarnation!
- We celebrate it! We call it Christmas!
- I am sure we all know the story of the birth of Christ
- As one song writer put it, It’s the most wonderful time of the year
- A wonderful time of lights, celebrations, family get-togethers
- One of the few times of the year that, almost, everyone is in a giving mood
. And I love to sing the songs of the birth of our Lord!
1. Silent night, Holy Night!
2. Hark the Harold Angels Sing
3. Away In The Manger
4. Come All Ye Faithful.
Come All Ye Faithful! Now there’s a Christmas Song I think people are becoming confused about
I think the world sings the chorus more like this:
Oh come let us ignore Him, Oh come let us ignore Him, Oh come let us ignore Him, Christ the Lord
- Like the Inn Keeper in the Bible story, they are rejecting and trying to ignore there is a savior born on this day
- Ignoring that God’s Son has, is making HIs entrance into the world.
- But, Like the Inn Keeper They’re too busy, not interested enough, too selfish to make room for the savior
Before I go any further let me say: It doesn’t matter what you think and it doesn’t matter how much you try to ignore it
- Jesus Christ came into this world and one day you’re going to have to face that.
- 2100 years ago, God became flesh and dwelt among us, and one day you will have to answer for what you believe about that
- On Christmas Morning (though not the exact day) the Christ of God was born And whoever believes on Him will be saved
- But in the meantime, we live our lives singing, Oh come Let Us Ignore Him
The Businesses that profit from His birth try to ignore Him.
- While Christmas brings to them their greatest profits for the year they wish you a happy holiday!
- Without Christ there is no holiday
- . Without Christ there is only a few days of celebration but no lasting happiness
- I understand, they don’t want to be offensive! They want to be politically correct
- They don’t want to lose someone’s business (bottom line)
- Maybe it’s time that we walked up to the cashier and let them know if they
- wish us a Happy Holiday instead of a Merry Christmas, we won’t buy anything
- But most of us Christians won’t do that because we’re singing along, Oh Come let us ignore Him
- Now! If someone doesn’t believe in Christ I am not suggesting they, against their belief, has to be forced to say, “Merry Christmas”
- . But listen my friend, If the stores can call Hanukah, Hanukah . If they can call Ramadan, Ramadan The they can call Christmas, Christmas
Our government is singing, Oh Come Let us Ignore Him
- We use to live in a country where Christmas was celebrated from the local hardware to the White House.
- No one hesitated to acknowledge the Christ in Christmas!
- They may not have been Christians!
- But they recognized Christmas as the Christian Holiday and the celebration of the birth of our Lord
- And listen! Argue all you want about whether it’s the correct day or not First of all I want to admit, it probably isn’t the exact day
2. But that doesn’t nullify the fact that He came
a. That He was born of a virgin
b. That He was God in the flesh
c. That He is savior of the world
d. That the angels rejoiced at His birth
d. That no one else in the History of the world can claim these facts about
their birth
C. Since before this country began, Christmas was about the birth of Christ
1. Our fore-Fathers celebrated the birth of Christ
a. On the White House Lawn
b. In every state capitol
c. Every county and every municipal building housing those in legislative
and ruling powers celebrated Christmas not Happy Holidays
2. And now they want to sing, Oh come Let Us Ignore Him
a. Mr. President! I won’t sing it with you
b. Mr. Governor, I won’t sing it with you
c. Mr. Mayor and/or township supervisor, I won’t sing it with you
D. That statement does not mean every mayor or supervisor or every
government official is an unbeliever
1. But if they’re Christian I think it’s time for them to stand up and say: The
song won’t change!
a. Christmas is, was, and always will be about Christ!
b. If you don’t want to celebrate it then don’t, but don’t try to change the
fact of what I believe
E. I don’t care if it offends you
1. Your Mosque offends me
2. Your Holidays offends me
3. But in America, you have the right to celebrate them as your belief and I
have the right to Come and Adore Him who is King of Kings and Lord of
Lords
Our Schools sing: Oh Come Let Us Ignore Him
A. We are now living in a time when your child can study the
Quran in school but not the Bible
1. As typed my notes something very interesting happened
a. As I typed the word “Quran” with a small Q my spell check told me it
was wrong. It had to be capitalized
b. I typed in the word Bible with a small B and it let me do it!
c. Oh Come let us Ignore Him
B. Gone are the days when our children will be told the story of the Christ in
their schools! (We need to get them back)
1. Gone are the manger scenes and the angels rejoicing!
2. Gone is a major part of the American life and culture because we want
to sing Oh Come Let Us ignore Him
The church is singing Oh Come Let Us Ignore Him
A. Does that shock you?
B. Christianity is still the world’s largest religion with over 2 Billion Christians
1. The next is Islam with about 893 million followers.
C. But while the U.S. is pressured by a minority why is the church sitting by and
listening to the music, Oh Come Let Us Ignore Him
1. While we sing the words, Oh Come Let Us Adore Him we sit with an
attitude of Ignoring Him
D. How can we, the church, sit by and let a minority tell us we can no longer
recognize or publicly proclaim the Christmas Message!
1. In our government
2. In our schools
3. In our businesses
4. In our daily lives
E. You say: I don’t sing Oh Come Let Us ignore Him
1. When is the last time you wrote your congressman about Christmas
displays
2. When is the last time you told your Mayor you want a Manger Scene
displayed at the Courthouse
3. When is the last time you told someone besides your neighbor, I want my
American right to openly and publicly practice my faith in Christ
F. No, but we do nothing and so, silently sing, Oh Come Let Us Ignore Him
G. We become the Inn Keeper and put Jesus in the Shed
1. He is still Savior and He is still Lord, but we ignore the place He deserves
in our lives and our Christian Culture
I know this has been somewhat of an odd Christmas Message.
A. I am way past that sweet little baby laying in a manger.
B. But I think it’s time we picked up our cross and started following Him.
1. And I think we should start this Christmas
I want to encourage you
1. Wish people a Merry Christmas!
a. Do It Loud and Do It Strong
2. When someone says: “Happy Holidays”
a. Ask them what they mean?
b. Ask them what it’s about?
c. Ask them The original reason for celebrating it
d. Then, with all the love you have, tell them, Christmas is about Christ
and I will never let you take that from me.
D. With my dying breath I will say Merry Christmas!
1. I don’t care if I am politically incorrect, because I am eternally correct
2. I don’t care if it offends you, it offends me that should ignore the reason for
the season
3. And let’s remind the world Christ is not on His way Out, He is on His Way
Back
a. And every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess
X. Now! Let’s stand and sing it the way it should be sung OH COME LET US ADORE HIM!
