Hebrews 6:1–3 NASB95
1 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do, if God permits.
The doctrine of laying on of hands becomes important in light of scriptures such as
1 Timothy 5:22 NASB95
22 Do not lay hands upon anyone too hastily and thereby share responsibility for the sins of others; keep yourself free from sin.
Laying hand and praying for someone should be a practice that is taken with all seriousness,
The hands are significant in the ministry of the spirit.
Deuteronomy 28:8 NASB95
8 “The Lord will command the blessing upon you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Putting our hands to something speaks of work.
When we lay hand on someone we are sending them forth to do a work or asking the Holy spirit to do a work in them.
Spiritual authority and power are transmitted through the hands.
this is especially significant when mean are placed in a position of authority.
the laying on of hands is affirming and acknowledges the call of God in the individuals life.
The purpose is to set forth an individual apart for the work that the Holy Spirit has called them to do.
Acts 13:2 NASB95
2 While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Laying on of hands in the Old Testament
Jacob laid hand on Ephraim and Manasseh
Genesis 48:14 NASB95
14 But Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, crossing his hands, although Manasseh was the firstborn.
Moses laid hands Joshua
Numbers 27:18 NASB95
18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;
Deuteronomy 34:9 NASB95
9 Now Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Elisha laid his hands Joash’s hand
2 Kings 13:16 NASB95
16 Then he said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” And he put his hand on it, then Elisha laid his hands on the king’s hands.
The person laying on the hands may transit spiritual blessing and authority.
You are responsible to keep your hands holy.
2. The person laying on hands may publicly commit to God the person upon whom the hands are laid for some purpose, position, and ministry.
Examples:
Purpose - Baby dedication, mission trip
Position - Worship leader, deacon
Ministry - Ordination, Pastor
3. The laying on of hands was symbolic of the hands of God being on the individual for a specific purpose.
Hands were laid on the men set aside as deacons
Acts 6:6 NASB95
6 And these they brought before the apostles; and after praying, they laid their hands on them.
Remember, laying on of hands is to be taken with all seriousness. Lay hands on no man suddenly.
Acts 6:3 NASB95
3 “Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.
Deacons are to be men of dignity and sobriety
1 Timothy 3:8–9 NASB95
8 Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain, 9 but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
2. Deacons are to be tested and beyond reproach
1 Timothy 3:10 NASB95
10 These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach.
3. Deacon are to be husbands of one wife and manage his household well.
1 Timothy 3:12 NASB95
12 Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.
Hands were laid on proven men.
Hands where laid on men sent out by the church.
Acts 13:2–3 NASB95
2 While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
Laying on of hand acknowledges the works of the Spirit.
The Spirit must be the One who calls out men. (or heals, set free)
Men acknowledge the work of the Spirit by separating those called.
The laying on of hands bestows special wisdom and grace to accomplish the task.
Acts 14:26–27 NASB95
26 From there they sailed to Antioch, from which they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had accomplished. 27 When they had arrived and gathered the church together, they began to report all things that God had done with them and how He had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.
Hands where laid on the Elders of the church
1 Timothy 5:17 NASB95
17 The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.
Elders are appointed in the churches
Titus 1:5 NASB95
5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you,
Men above reproach.
Titus 1:6–8 NASB95
6 namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion. 7 For the overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, 8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
2. Men who hold fast the faithful Word of God.
Titus 1:9 NASB95
9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
There are certain qualifications that must be met before hands are laid on.
God’s anointing and power comes through the laying on of hands.
Elders are to receive spiritual gifts through the laying on of hands
1 Timothy 4:14 NASB95
14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.
1 . A spiritual gift was recieved through the laying on of hands.
2. A prophetic utterance indicated the kid of spiritual gift.
3. The spiritual gift must be kindled afresh by the receiver.
2 Timothy 1:6 NASB95
6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
Spiritual gifts are to be expected for the ministry in which the Spirit has called. these gifts are imparted through the laying on of hands.
