Dig into the Scripture
Before I read 2 Chronicles 7:14 I want to remind all of us about the context of this verse. Partly becuase I think that it is always important to understand the circumstances of the scripture but also becuase I think we use this verse almost flippantly.
This verse in my opinion has a far greater message than what we tend to give it. We tend to use this verse almost as if to say that if things are going badly if we just apologize then God will swoop in and make everything ok…This is comforting but in my opinion it is too simplistic.
This passage comes on the heals of Solomon finished building the Temple that David wanted to build but becuase of his disobedience as not allowed to.
Solomon was chosen not becuase he was so much better than David but becuase when Solomon was asked by God what he wanted as a gift to him instead of power, and military victories Solomon asked to Wisdom.
This clenched the deal for him…becuase true wisdom demands a total dependance on God instead of a powerful human persona….
So after Solomon has built the temple he stands at the Altar before the people and he thanks God for the temple and asked that God would inhabit the temple. We then see a truly Awesome sight where God fills the Temple with God’s presence. Fire fills the temple and the people seeing this immediately feel on their faces and worshipped God…That actually said the God is God! God’s faithful love endures forever…Then they celebrated the Festival of Shelters for the Next 7 days.
You with me? Solomon has just finished the temple and God’s presence has been seen felt and celebrated….Then God responds to all of this starting at Verse 11

11 So Solomon finished the Temple of the LORD, as well as the royal palace. He completed everything he had planned to do in the construction of the Temple and the palace. 12 Then one night the LORD appeared to Solomon and said,

“I have heard your prayer and have chosen this Temple as the place for making sacrifices. 13 At times I might shut up the heavens so that no rain falls, or command grasshoppers to devour your crops, or send plagues among you.

Wow Whiplash yet??? After all the celebration and jubilation God says to Solomon basically this…I am with you but there will be times that Isreal may suffer becuase of their disobedience in the future.
That takes the air out of the room. So our main verse takes on greater meaning now doesn’t it? God is laying out the steps to reconciliation between God and man.
2 Chronicles 7:14
2 Chronicles 7:14 NLT
14 Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
God chose to dwell in the Temple Solomon had made even though God knew that there would be times the nation not just Solomon or an individual but the nation would get off mission…God chose to dwell and gave instructions on how the land would be healed.
If My People Would
Humble Ourselves
Pray and Seek the face of God
Repent From our Wicked ways

15 My eyes will be open and my ears attentive to every prayer made in this place. 16 For I have chosen this Temple and set it apart to be holy—a place where my name will be honored forever. I will always watch over it, for it is dear to my heart.

So today God’s people have come together on behalf of the Broken Arrow Nazarene Church, The City of Broken Arrow, The State of Oklahoma, The United States of America and the World at large to:
Humble ourselves
Pray seeking God’s Face
Repent of our Sin
if we will do this in an authentic way God will hear us, God will be honored because God loves us…and God will Heal out Land.
Let’s Pray
Humble ourselves
Pray seeking God’s Face
Repent of our Sin
Please heal our land...
