The Beginnings

Genesis 1:1 NIV

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

This serves as a two-fold statement:

It’s a summary statement about what this entire section is going to talk about.

God seems to have an authoritative and intentional design in mind. Each word, detail, and act here is not wasted!

Heavens - Heb. ‘shamayim’ = Skies

Earth - Heb. ‘eretz’ = Land

I.e., what is up there and what is down here; all of it God has made.

Genesis 1:2 NIV

2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
