Phi. 2:1-4                              Humility and Christian Unity                                               6/30/96

ABCC

I.   Introduction and Review                                                                                    527

¨       There is contention, strife & division within the church & individual families today

¨       Paul’s exhortation for Christian unity when facing opponents (1:27-30)

> Stand firm in one spirit = strength for perseverance from the LORD

> Striving together with one mind or soul = contending side by side with BELIEVERS

> Not alarmed by opponents = courage while contending with ADVERSARY

¨       Christ has made believers one (Eph. 4:4-6; Gal. 3:27-29) “WE”

II.  Unity When Facing Internal Opposition & Temptation

     A. What was Paul’s appeal?

         1. Be of the same mind = mindset, disposition or attitude (Col. 3:2)

         2. Maintain the same love = sacrificial response to God & others

         3. Be united in one spirit = harmony is emotions & feelings

         4. Be intent on one purpose = harmony in thought & actions

¨       Christians in a local congregation are to be wholly devoted to each other in unity!

¨       Not simply tolerating each other or responding out of duty; no patronizing or flattery - but rather emotionally & physically involved in each others’ lives

     B. How was Paul’s appeal to be obey?

         1. Do nothing from selfish or empty conceit (v. 3a)

             - Self-interest, advancement leads to vain or empty glory

Humility and Christian Unity, pg. 2

         2. Do not merely look out for your own personal interest (4a)

         3. Regard others as more important (v.3b) -

             - humility = proper evaluation of self & other believers

             - Look for the grace, giftedness & strengths in other believers (1Co. 13:7;

               1Pe. 4:8)

         4. Consider the interests of others (4b) - apply your mind & abilities for others!

     C. Why was Paul’s appeal to be obeyed? (v. 1-2)

         1. Because of the encouragement or comfort you receive from Christ

         2. Because of the consolation or comfort of God’s love for you

         3. Because of your fellowship with the Holy Spirit

         4. Because of true affection and compassion from Christ toward you

         5. Because of your love for Paul (v. 2a) - for God’s messenger & servant

Are you satisfied with the unity that exist at ABCC?  Are you satisfied simply because we are not biting each others’ heads off, not open rivalry & strife, not open contention, scandal & self advancement.  Are you satisfied with you relationship with other members here?  Do you see others as true Christian brothers & sisters in your heart?  Do you sympathize when others hurt & rejoice when they are blessed?  Will you show others the grace & forgiveness that Jesus Christ has shown you?  Remember the comfort & encouragement of that grace & forgiveness!  Can you remember when you first discovered God’s great love for you?  Can you remember the last time you felt extremely guilty & God reminded you of His love for you - comfort & consolation!  By the mercies of God, we must humble ourselves & live as one people!
