Bible Study John 7:30-53
Opportunity!
morning for the seven days, a priestly procession led by the high priest went down to the pool of Siloam and drew water in a golden pitcher. They went up to the Temple at the time of the morning sacrifices to the blowing of the shofar (or trumpet), as the pilgrims shook lulabs, or leafy branches, to symbolize the wilderness journey and held up a piece of citrus fruit (traditionally a citron or etrog) to symbolize the harvest (so Morris, Carson, Burge). They marched around the altar seven times, pouring the water into a funnel on the side of the altar, and it flowed about the base of the altar as the Temple choir sang the Hallel from Psalms 113–118.
Possibly in the morning (when it was symbolically appropriate), Jesus “stood and shouted to the crowds” that the thirsty believers could come and drink of him. Since Jesus was the divine envoy, he then became the source of the “waters of salvation” (Isa 12:3), fulfilling the symbolism of the water ceremony.
Jesus depicts their concern with strict observance of the law as preventing them from understanding what is truly important to God
