Introduction

Examples of slogans...
Modern virtue signaling slogans...
Christmas slogan: Jesus is the reason for the season...
Transition: It is true that Jesus is the reason for the season. However, for too many today this slogan is nothing more than Christian virtue signaling.
This morning we will look at Matthew’s presentation of the Christmas story to be reminded why Jesus truly is the reason for the season.
Read Matthew 1:18-25

Big Idea: Jesus is the divine, promised Savior of God’s people.

What does that mean?
Transition: This passage gives us four proofs that Jesus is the divine, promised Savior of God’s people.

He was born of a virgin.

Read Matthew 1:18b, 20b, 23a
Why does the virgin birth matter?

He was adopted into the Davidic line.

Read Matthew 1:20b
How is Jesus part of the Davidic line?
Why does the Davidic line matter?

15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ”

He would save His people from their sins.

Read Matthew 1:21
Jesus (Yeshua) = “Yahweh saves”
Jesus was a person on a mission from the very moment of the miraculous virgin conception. A mission that never changed!
This too fulfills Scripture: Psalm 130:7-8
How would Jesus save His people from their sins?

He was the embodiment of God’s presence with His people.

Read Matthew 1:23b
This section gives shows us multiple ways that God revealed Himself to His people: through history (see the genealogy), through dreams, through angels, and through Scripture. But, the most important way God revealed Himself to mankind was in the the person of Jesus Christ; Immanuel, God with us!
What does this fulfill?

So What?

What we believe about Jesus matters more than what we say about Him.

How we live our lives tells a lot about what we really believe about Jesus.

Next week we are going to look at this same passage and consider how Joseph gives us a great example of a proper response to Jesus.

If Jesus is “the reason for the season” how will that motivate you this season?
