The Mighty Angel

Revelation 10

Introduction:

Some of God’s greatest attributes are:  Mercy, love, grace

Seems that we can see them better in Rev. than many other places

In our study we are between the 6th and 7th trumpet judgments

After the 6 seals there was a pause

Now after the 6 trumpets there is a pause

I.                   A Messenger from Heaven

*He brings a message of hope and encouragement

1.      His descent from heaven 1

Contrast that with 9:1 “fell from heaven”

2.      Who is this angel?

*Some believe it is a mighty angel like Michael

*Probably the Lord Jesus:  Angel of Jehovah in OT

3.      See who it is in the description given:

1)      Clothed with a cloud v. 1

Ex. 19:19 Mt. Sinai covered with a thick cloud

Ex.  Led by a cloud during the day

Ex. 24:15-18 God appeared to Moses in a cloud of Glory

Acts 1:9 Jesus ascended into a cloud

Thessalonians:  Jesus will return to the clouds

Psalm 104:3 He maketh the clouds His chariot

2)      Crowned with a rainbow

Genesis 9:12-16 God calls rainbow “My bow”

Reminds us of God’s promises

Crowned with rainbow can show God’s faithfulness

3)      Face shining as sun

Matt. 17:1-2 Mount of Transfiguration

Acts 9:3-6 Saul’s conversion

Rev. 1:16 His countenance was as the sun shineth in His strength

Malachi 4:2 “Sun of righteousness”

4)      Feet as pillars of fire

Rev. 1:15

4.      See in His deeds:

1)      Holding a book v. 2

*Not told what the book is

*When was the last time we saw a book?  5:1-3, 5, 7, 6:1

         -emphasis on Opened book

2)      Standing with one foot on the earth and another on the sea

Reminding us of who is in charge

After book was opened it may have appeared that He lost control

Now He appears with the book:  This is the plan

I am still over the earth and the sea

*I wonder how many times he appears to have lost control in our lives?

Also think of Lord’s words to Joshua: “Every place the sole of your foot touches is yours”

*Heaven and the earth belong to Him

3)      Roars as a lion

Proverbs 19:12 King’s wrath is as roaring of a lion

Joel 3:16 “The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter His voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of His people, and the strength of the children of Israel.”

Rev. 5 Jesus is referred to as “Lion of the Tribe of Judah”

Lion only roars when he has been victorious

Jesus gives victory in our lives as well.
