SF021 - THE MEANING OF BAPTISM (Romans 6 1-4)
Romans 6:1-4
Introduction
Baptism is an ordinance of the Lord Jesus, obligatory upon every believer, wherein he is immersed in water in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, as a sign of his fellowship with the death and resurrection of Christ, of remission of sins, and of giving himself up to God, to live and walk in newness of life. It is prerequisite to church fellowship, and to participation in the Lord's Supper. (The Abstract of Principles)

1A. WHY SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED?
1B. To follow the example set by Christ.
Mark 1:9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
2B. Because Christ commands it.
Matthew 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
3B. It demonstrates that I really am a believer.
Acts 18:8 Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord with all his household, and many of the Corinthians when they heard were believing and being baptized.
1 John 2:3 By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.
2A. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF BAPTISM?
1B. Baptism illustrates Christ’s burial and resurrection.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
Colossians 2:12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
2B. Baptism illustrates my new-life as a Christian.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
Romans 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
Ø Baptism does not make you a believer - it shows that you already believe.
Ø Baptism does not “save” you; only your faith in Christ does that.
Ø Baptism is like a wedding ring - it is the outward symbol of the commitment you made in your heart.
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
3A. WHY BE BAPTIZED BY IMMERSION?
The outward element to be used in this ordinance is water, in which the person is to be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Immersion - the dipping of the person in water - is necessary for the due administration of this ordinance. (Baptist Confession of Faith 1689, Article 29, no. 3&4)

The Greek word baptize means “to immerse or dip under water”.

The founders of denominations agree:
Martin Luther “I would have those who are to be baptized to be entirely immersed, as the word imports and the mystery signifies.”
John Calvin “The word ‘baptize’ signifies to immerse. It is certain that immersion was the practice of the ancient church.”
John Wesley “Buried with Him, alludes to baptizing by immersion according to the custom of the first church.” (Rick Warren, “Discovering Saddleback Membership”)
4A. WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?
Baptism is an ordinance of the New Testament, ordained by Jesus Christ, to be to the person who is baptized - a sign of his fellowship with Christ in His death and resurrection; of his being engrafted into Christ; of remission of sins; and of that person's giving up of himself to God, through Jesus Christ, to live and walk in newness of life.
Those who actually profess repentance towards God, faith in, and obedience to, our Lord Jesus Christ, are the only proper subjects for this ordinance. (Baptist Confession of Faith 1689, Article 29, no. 1&2)
1B. Every person who has repented of his sin and placed his or her faith in Christ
“But when they believed Philip as he preached the Good News... and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” Acts 8:12
5A. WHEN SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED?
As soon as you have believed!
Acts 2:41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.

What prevents me from being baptized?” And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him.
