INTRO:
Foolishness vs. Faith
Foolishness of the world is that you can satisfy the debt you owe to God
False understanding of God
False teaching of the scriptures
False look at who you are
You are Justified by Faith (Debt paid/ Righteousness obtained/ Salvation given by Christ)
5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? 7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
Faith Gives Righteousness
Faith Gives Righteousness
6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?
Abraham counted righteous:
Not by works of the Law
By belief in God
not a thinking of God but a life of obedience “Belief in God”
Abraham’s faith:
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” 4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
Left all that he knew
Trusted God with his life
God fulfilled His promise to Abraham
Second Example:
3 And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” 4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
Third Example:
1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
Abraham believed and obeyed. trusted God
counted as his righteousness
20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. 22 That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.”
7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.
Issue:
False teachers (Judaizers) held status and tradition as determining factors for righteousness
Lineage was boasted in
Same stance as the Pharisees during Jesus’ ministry
38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” 39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did,
Abraham’s works:
Belief in God
Not external actions or alter building
Trust and obedience to God
Because of status some believe that makes them immune to judgement
ILLUS: Head Coach’s Son
APP: No matter your status at the foot of the cross we are all on bended knees
12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Why did the man who beat his chest and could not look to heaven go home justified?
His sin broke him
In comparison to a holy God he fell short
Couldn’t be good enough to stand justified before God
Pleaded for God’s help
Doesn’t matter who you are - You are made righteous through faith in Christ
Doesn’t matter who your parents are - You are made righteous through faith in Christ
Doesn’t matter your career or social status - You are made righteous through faith in Christ
Doesn’t matter how many followers/ how popular you are - You are made righteous through faith in Christ
Faith Leads to Blessing
Faith Leads to Blessing
8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
Gentiles had no way of right standing before God
Law was not given to them
Needed to be justified by FAITH
Through faith, anyone who believes, is justified and are blessed
What is the blessing those of faith and Abraham received?
8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—
That I may gain CHRIST
God is the blessing that we receive
we get Him
His Righteousness
His Forgiveness
His Love
His Atonement
His Saving Grace
WE GET HIM
We are justified by faith in Jesus
22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
