John 1:1-5
John 1:1-5
Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Joh 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Joh 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
There are 3 statements in this verse:
a) In the beginning was the Word (v.1a)
With evident allusion to the first word of Genesis. (Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.) But John elevates the phrase from its reference to a point of time, the beginning of creation, to the time of absolute pre-existence before any creation, which is not mentioned until verse. 3. This beginning had no beginning.
The word (Jesus) (gave it a state of existence). This expression (The Word-Logos) is the keynote and theme of the entire gospel.
