When God Shows Up
INTRODUCTION
ILL- When Aunt Myra showed up for Christmas
Shepherds the night God showed up.
     It changed their evening.
They never would be the same.
Isaiah 9:6-7
Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

5 Gifts We Receive From God

1. Hope

Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Confidence in what is to come.
Hope is the confident assurance that God is going to complete what he has started.
Hope points to future- what is yet to come.
Baby is hope= a beginning of life.
Our salvation is not in the coming of a baby, but the coming baby was the next step toward the cross.
Hope during a terrible time for Israel- in captivity.
“son is given”
Hope comes in the gift of a baby.
John 3:16
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 6:23
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Gifts must be received- not a gift if the recipient doesn’t have the right to refuse it.

2. Security

Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
“and the government shall be upon his shoulder.”
He is in charge with all authority as God.
In a world of chaos, he is on his throne and in control.
Philippians 2:9-11
Philippians 2:9–11 ESV
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
He gives direction to us as one with authority of God
Matthew 28:18-20
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
When we have God’s guarantee, we have nothing to worry about.

3. Presence

Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
This child to be born is God in the flesh.
Isaiah 7:14
Isaiah 7:14 ESV
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Immanuel- God with us.
Wonderful Counselor=
wonder= miraculous
Counselor= giving of wise advise.
Not an amazing listener (modern counseling). He is an amazing advise giver.
We have a tendency to want God to listen to us but we do not want to listen to him.
He knows how to fix all our struggles. He cares enough to listen but also cares enough to tell us how to live.
Most of our struggles are the result of our failure to listen to his counsel.
Mighty God= divine power
Spoke creation into being.
Calmed the sea/ resurrected Lazarus/ water to wine.
Jesus is God
Everlasting Father= father of eternity
Jesus is God in the flesh. One with the Father.
Always been, always will be.
Jesus was not created when Mary conceived.
Jesus already was, he just took on flesh
Colossians 1:15-18
Colossians 1:15–18 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
Prince of Peace= the goal of every king- peace and prosperity.
Eternal peace (7a)
Godly peace= no compromise- happens when God has his way.
When God’s will is done on earth as it is in heaven there will be peace.
Peace can only happen when there is no compromise. Everyone has to agree. Until there is complete agreement, there is war. Earthly peace is always temporary.
Peace comes with surrender.

4. Permanency

Isaiah 9:7
Isaiah 9:7 ESV
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Establish and uphold.
Eternal Kingdom.
Divided Kingdom- much turmoil - Waring between them.
reminder of something better to come.
2 Corinthians 1:21-22
2 Corinthians 1:21–22 ESV
21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
What God establishes never ends.

5. Intense Devotion

“Zeal of the Lord of hosts”
God cares deeply about justice and peace.
His justice demands payment for sin.
How can God show both justice and love?
By providing the payment for our sin.
Loved us enough to send his son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins.
CONCLUSION
Have you accepted the gift?
