Jesus calls himself in this passage - GOOD. The Good Shepherd.
Christ is called the “great Shepherd” in Heb 13:20 and the “Chief Shepherd” in 1Pe 5:4.
But He uses the word GOOD.
I want to draw your thoughts to a passage in Matthew 19:17. Here is the story of the rich young ruler who comes to Jesus and asks him what he msut do to inherit eternal life.
Now I struggled with this passage in the back of my mind as I have tried to study over this material, because in the KJV Jesus refuses to be called "good"
I began to look at other versions and I found something very interesting. No other version but the KJV and the NKJV translate this completely different -
So I began to dig a little deeper. I found Adam Clarke gives a tremendous word study on this passage and he translates it the exact same way.
Here is what most translations and Adam Clark say:
"Why do you ask me about what is good?" and then goes on to say, "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."
Then I began to see that Jesus wasn't refusing to be called good, he was throwing the ball back into the rich young ruler's court.
Giving him a decision - in our words, "Do you believe I am He?"
The young man was not convinced enough as he turned and walked away he didn't want to follow and obey Jesus.
Good means - "noble, praiseworthy, desirable, and pleasing to God" I think Jesus fully qualifies for this description.
He then gives us some reasons why He is the Good Shepherd. I want to focus on these for a few moments tonight with the Lord's help.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd becauseHe giveth His life for the sheep 11, 15.This is later expanded on in 17-18It is the motivation for the Father's love - 17It is a power within the Good Shepherd - 18It is a commandment from the Father 18He is a Good Shepherd because"I know my sheep and am known of mine." 14
Sometime between verse 21 and 22 but pretty much same group of people
Jesus gives some other things He as the Good Shepherd does:
Verse 27 - My sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow me. Verse 28 - I give unto them (my sheep) eternal life - What is eternal life -
- 1 John 2:24-25 King James Version (KJV)
24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. - 1 John 5:10-12 King James Version (KJV)
10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. - 1 John 5:19-21 King James Version (KJV)
19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. - The Classic Passage to define what Eternal Life is -
John 17:2-4 King James Version (KJV)
2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
28b - They shall never perish - Eternal life is to Know Jesus Christ- but they are also given the promise of never perishing - this doesn't mean there will never be a physical death - but rather they will forever live in God's Holy Presence even after their physical death. 28 c-29Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock
That shadows a dry, thirsty land;
He hideth my life in the depths of His love,
And covers me there with His hand,
And covers me there with His hand.
One of my favorite scriptures on the hand of God is found in
Isaiah 40:12 (KJV)
12 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
Think about this rehtorical question from the Prophet Isaiah. "Who hath measured the waters…" It is possible to get at least a rough estimate of how much water there is on the planet. Marine Biologist have said there is something like 326,000,000,000,000,000,000 gallons (326 million trillion gallons)
There is probabbly more than that but however much there is, God has measured them,
But Isiah doesn't stop there - God has measured them in His Hand. Not hands but HAND.
• “Have you ever wondered how Big God’s hand
He has measured the 7 seas in the hallow of his hand, and yet he can also rest every saint of God in the hallow of his hand. “
He measures the heaven - a seemingly endless infinity of blackness and space - with the span of his hand. Again not hands but span.) - No wonder the Psalmist declared
Psalm 89:13 (KJV)
13 Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.
Psalm 98:1 (KJV)
1 O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvelous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.
Then comes the clincher - the one that threw them over the edge verse 30 I and My Father are ONE!!!
