Sermon Background

Just finished Sencerity | Thomas introduced Kingdoms | Today going to expand on this
Soccer Story - Cornerstone Game - Didn’t lose for 5 years | Formation Description | One person up front | Finally broken down after 5 years of not losing
Are we playing defence? Are we leaving it to one person? Jesus is King…but do they know?

Key Scripture - Matthew 16:13-19

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Context | Jesus just fed 4,000 | Pharasees demanded signs and Disciples just doubted Jesus because they had no food
Greek word Church = Ekklesia - A gathering of the people of God.
If Broken Down 2 Segments “Ek = “Out of” | “kaleo” signifying “to call” together meaning “The called out ones” | What is Jesus saying “On this Peter, on this Rock, on this PERSON I will build MY PEOPLE”. | Church who we are |
Transition = Where Church is mentioned | Ephesians

Ephesians 1:19-23

19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

| Church is the Body | all of us |

Ephesians 2:19-22

19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

|Break down a bit | Might say “Structures Mat” | Bring attention to Verse 19: “Saints = People of God” | Household = “Oikeios” = you BELONG to a certain family | Plucked from Darkness |
Then Paul talks about Temples | Strange | What comes to mind when “Temple” |
Solomons Temple | Purpose of temple|
Characteristics of Old Testament Temples | Big | Places of Prayer | A place to Come
So what about today? What comes to mind?
Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 6:16-17;

16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,

I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them,

and I will be their God,

and they shall be my people.

Temple = Naos = “To Dwell” which is the “Abode of God” A place set apart for God to dwell who is FREQUENTLY perceived to be using it as a dwelling.
Who are the temples of today?
You are the modern day temples.
|Temples of Today | Some Major Improvements and some characteristics which are the same | Major Improvements = Back then had to visit vs now. Legs we can take the gospel to them |
Some things true of them should be true of us | Noticable and Big | Are we noticable? | There are invisible temples | when Jesus Died he released the Spirit now DWELLS in you.
We are not called to be bunkers but big noticble temples because the world needs to know about Jesus Christ. World needs to know we are housing Spirit.
Transition = |If we are to be temples out there, what is my role up here and how do we go about it? | Let’s go to Ephesians 4:11-14

Ephesians 4:11-14

11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

Saints = God’s People | Here to EQUIP | People need to know by Witnessing your ACTS or hearing your WORDS that there is a god | Jesus is King but do they know | They are in darkness, better way
Recap on what we know so far | What Church is - Not a building where we go but who we are | Not what but Who the temple is | Not coming to the physical building Church to just snack bite but to get equipped |
You don’t go to a football game to watch the huddle. We are huddled up.
Transition = Back to Key Scripture

Matthew 16:13-20

|Interesting how the Disciples Answered vs Peter Answered | Peter Answered | Jesus changed his name | Not flesh and Blood but God | Peter was Open | History of Bible and God using WILLING people | God is not looking extradorniary ability, availability | God and me | Are we open to him? | Peter said what GOD told him to say.

Jesus Changed Peters Name

Jesus son of God, Simon son of Jonah (man) | Gives new identity | Peter = Rock | Peter Stepped up and was ready to be worked through
OWN IT - Your identity | My Identity when I first walked in vs forever changed | i GET his love | God’s calling for me not from flesh and blood calling | 2nd time I came to church | God’s put a calling on my heart and I am just trying to obey | He is opening doors “I am available”
What I could do (Shy back, enemy, others perceptions, talk qualifications, fake it)
Our Identity is not what we are DOING, it’s WHO WE ARE | Stop answering to people calling Average vs ACCEPTED | God may not be able to use you if you cling to society | You’re a mess
Jesus says;

18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

|Got this scripture wrong - Explain | Hells gates | We have been playing Defence | We are the soccer team sitting 10 deep | Kingdom to advance | What gates have been put around in your life? Work, Generational lines, community |

19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

If you have keys to “Something” you don’t own the “Something” but it is yours to exercise authority over in the name of the one that entrusted you to it.
Jesus conquered Death through cross now holds authority over it | Through our Key Scripture Jesus is telling Peter who is the church’s represented “confessor” and through Peter tells the whole church that he entrusts the keys to him. The Kingdom that Jesus himself taught about , a spiritual Kingdom which Jesus reigns. In this passage Jesus is about to go to the cross | He is about to leave earth, die for our sins, and return to heaven
And if I may put it this way, it's as if He turns to Peter and says, "The work of the kingdom has been started; and I'm about to go now. Until I return for you, you—and all of the people who believe on Me because of your testimony—are going to be here while the work of the spread of the kingdom goes on. Here are the keys." Think of it! The very keys of the kingdom of heaven! What great authority it is that our Savior and Lord has entrusted to His church on earth!
You have Authority to March right in there and Advance. Gods. Kingdom | Live offensively as the Body | Not in your strength | Open and available and he will open doors.
You have been given the keys and been sent out to your places to show or Teach the Good News
Instead of coming to church “What will I learn” instead “What can I learn today that I can share with someone else” .
We should be saying; “What am I going to learn today that has come from God’s word, from my heavenly father, from my Lord and Saviour that I am going to implement into my life so that I can shine like a Temple of God and someone says to me WHAT’S UP!?”

Jesus Commandment - Matthew 28:18

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

No need to worry - I am with you.
| Sometimes Difficult | Somtimes a battle | Look at Victoria and without warriors of God that kingdom of darkness might prevail | Sometimes difficult cause your own strength, sometimes it’s just difficult because of the enemy who will search kill and destroy.
GOD HAS YOUR BACK

Ephesians 6:10-17

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

You have all you need to make disciples of the world. You have all you need to pass on the joy, the freedom, the forgiveness that you feel onto someone else.
As a body we can be joined together so tight that even a spec of darkness can not find it’s way in.
Right now we are huddled up, right now we are together as a body and as this body gets stronger so we will out there.
We can say “I am available” we can say “Lord use me” we can say “I am here, ready to fulfill your purpose” and we can follow jesus together!
