Hebrews 3:1-6

Hebrews 3:1–6 ESV
Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

Holiness is not a status of achievement
Holiness is a status conferred upon believers
We are Holy because of the work of the High Priest

Hebrews: An Introduction and Commentary (i) Moses the Servant and Jesus the Son (3:1–6)

There is no support for the view that the call comes from within a man, for in all cases the call comes from God. Man’s part is to become a co-operator by responding to it.

Hebrews: An Introduction and Commentary (i) Moses the Servant and Jesus the Son (3:1–6)

To share in a heavenly call is to become closely identified with the caller, i.e. God. No wonder such people are called ‘holy’. The New Testament implies that this is the norm for Christians. They are a called out people.

This is the heavenly calling unto salvation
This great Salvation that the writer explores in Chapter 1 and 2
Consider Jesus
If I believed in taking a part of Scripture out of its context and going off on my own little diatribe, that would be the phrase I would pick

Numbers 12:6–8 ESV
And he said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream. Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house. With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

Jesus is better than Moses
Who gets the credit when there is beautiful craftsmanship?
Not the thing created
The one who artfully created it

Typology
vs 6
Christ is faithful as a son
What is this house that Christ has built, and Moses was faithful in?
The people of God
Conditional statement
Only those who are obedient, as Christ was obedient should have any claim of being “In God’s House”
He is our High Priest, leading us out of sin as we follow Him
“Boasting in our Hope”
We do not boast in anything but Christ
He is our hope
Conclusion
If we are the house that God has built as the people of God, then we follow in the footsteps of Moses, a servant in God’s household
But as we talked about last week, Jesus is the one leading us out.
We follow Him in faith
And we must follow Him in obedience
So this morning, this passage speaks differently to two different groups
First is those who are outside of the house
Those who have not shared in this heavenly calling
If you are here this morning, and there is any doubt that you have trusted in the Lord, and have received His salvation
There is only one act of obedience that matters to you this morning
To repent of your sin, to trust Jesus as the sacrifice for that sin, and respond to Him in faith.
If that’s you this morning, don’t leave this place without talking to one of our elders. Let us show you what the Bible teaches about Sin and faith
But if you are here this morning, and you are part of this house. You are a believer of Jesus Christ
Salvation was not the end of the obedience Christ is owed
Just as Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, and led them through the wilderness, so also we continue to follow
They were not led out of Egypt just to stay right outside Egypt
You were not led out of sin and death just to stay right on the other side of it
We continue to walk and follow Christ
Growing in obedience, as Christ was obedient
So Christian, this morning our call is to continue to strive to “Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God”
Boasting only in our one hope, Jesus Christ.
