1 Chronicles 29:10-14 (KJV)
10 Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.
11 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.
12 Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.
13 Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.
14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.
In 1966 George Jones released a Gospel album entitled "Old Brush Arbors" On this album was a song called "Lord You've Been Mighty Good to Me." The words went like this:
This year the boll weevil, he lived in my cotton
The big river flooded out my corn in the bottom
Talk about a man with troubles I've got 'em.
But you've been mighty good to me.
Lord, you've been mighty good to me.
My barn burned down and it was nearly new
A rat must of knawed the wires in two
But don't get me wrong I'm not fussin' at you.
For you've been mighty good to me.
Lord, you've been mighty good to me.
{Lord, } you've been mighty good to me
You've let me keep my family
To me you never have been rude
You keep my table filled with food.
And I thank you every night and day
But I don't, enough I should say.
Lord, you've been mighty good to me.
My best horse fell and broke both hind legs
What chickens I have they won't lay any eggs
But you know, Lord, I never borrow or beg
For you've been mighty good to me
Lord, you've been mighty good to me.
(Lord, you've been mighty good to me
You've let me keep my family
To me you never have been rude
You keep my table filled with food.)
I have no idea whether George Jones truly felt this way or not, but I do know this is a very similar attitude to King David in our passage. He is extoling and praising God and thanking Him for allowing him to see this day. I almost see the Singer of Israel raise his tear stained eyes to heaven strumming on his harp saying, "Lord You've been mighty Good to me."
This was a big day, an exciting day for David no wonder he paused to celebrate the victory. He didn't just whoop it up - he gave praise and thanks where it was due.
I kind of feel like doing that this morning. Just stopping for a moment and going on a mental road trip and stoping at historical sign markers along the way and saying "Thank's Lord" "You've been mighty good to me."
I thank God for family - God created the physical family as a representation of Himself. The Bible says in Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. While I know there are many spiritual single individuals, nothing wrong with that, there is also a mystical picture of the family that represents God.
I know I have told it before - But I like to just go back and revisit it every once in a while - While I go down my own nostalgic path, perhaps you would like to visit yours
Grandpa Harding - A by-product of Grandma and Grandpa obeying God - my mother was exposed to the Gospel and this Good Old Fashioned WayAs a young girl she gave her heart to the Lord but things came in and she drifted later.Dad a young Vietnamn vet fresh back from the field they met and things were fine for a while - but then Uncle Joe passed away and bitterness and anger settled in the home. Spats, fights, dark times followed that. BUT I THANK GOD - a knock came to the little house in Winfield - and Jesus came back to our house - Things took a different road after that - It was somewhat maybe not as extreme as Gaither wrote several years ago - but the application is similar
Today, I went down to the place where I used to go
Today, I saw the same old crowd I knew before
And when they asked me what had happened, I tried to tell them
Thanks to Calvary, I don't come here anymore
Thanks to Calvary I am not the man (dad) I used to be
Thanks to Calvary things are different than before
And as the tears ran down my face I tried to tell them (him)(her)
Thanks to Calvary, I don't come (live) here anymore
Then we went down to the house where we used to live
My little boy (girl) ran behind the door, like so many times before;
And I said "Son (Honey) you don't need to be afraid, you've got a new Daddy now
(And I said, "Son (Honey) never fear, you've got a new Mommy here,)
Thanks to Calvary we don't live here anymore
Thanks to Calvary I am not the man (dad) I used to be
Thanks to Calvary things are different than before
And as the tears ran down my face I tried to tell them (him)(her)
Thanks to Calvary, I don't come (live) here anymore
Thanks to Calvary I am not the man (dad) I used to be
Thanks to Calvary things are different than before
And as the tears ran down my face I tried to tell them (him)(her)
Thanks to Calvary, I don't come (live) here anymore
Thanks to Calvary, we don't live here anymore
I Thank God for my little Church Family I grew up with - Not perfect but covered in Grace - No they didn't get everything right - I'm sure I don't get everything right either - But if I can have just a little of what they had I will feel I have been successful. I thank God they taught me that I could KNOW FOR MYSELF that I had been born again - I didn't have to question. I hear often the saying of C.C. Hamm - "It's sky blue, blood red, and I wouldn't pay an angel a nickel to come tell me I was saved." I thank God there are many services etched in my mind of when God's presence came and filled that little church and the Glory came down - I thank God
I Thank God that a little over ten years ago when I moved here I found another church family - I thank God for all the times the Glory of God has come down here. Sure we always want more - but my God sure has been good to us here. I thank God
I Thank God for my little family - We were driving to Mom and Dad Akard' yesterday and someone made the remark - We have so much fun in our family - and my I sure do love my little family. No we aren't perfect. We may not do things like other people do - but I love when we do things together. I love that we are so often together. My God has been so good to me - I THANK GOD
I Thank God for even the hard times I have been through - Perhaps Dottie Rambo put it best when she wrote:
THANK YOU FOR THE VALLEY
THANK YOU FOR THE VALLEY I WALKED THROUGH TODAY.
THE DARKER THE VALLEY THE MORE I LEARN TO PRAY.
I FOUND YOU WHERE THE LILLIES ARE BLOOMING BY THE WAY.
AND I THANK YOU FOR THE VALLEY I WALKED THROUGH TODAY.
CHORUS)
THANK YOU FOR EVERY HILL I'VE CLIMBED
FOR EVERY TIME THE SUN DIDN'T SHINE.
THANK YOU FOR EVERY LONLEY NIGHT
I PRAYED UNTILL I KNEW THAT EVERY THING WAS ALRIGHT.
AND I THANK YOU FOR THE VALLEY I WALKED THROUGH TODAY
LIFE CAN'T BE ALL SUNSHINE OR THE FLOWERS WOULD DIE.
THE RIVERS WOULD BE Desserts ALL BARREN AND DRY.
LIFE CAN'T BE ALL BLESSING FOR THERE'D BE NO NEED TO PRAY.
SO I THANK YOU FOR THE VALLEY I WALKED THROUGH TODAY.
