He became Humble 2:1-4
It was the Very Spirit of Christ and His relation to the Father"The Son can do nothing of Himself" (John v. 19)."I can of My own self do nothing; My judgment is just, because I seek not Mine own will" (John v. 30)."1 receive not glory from men " (John v. 41)."I am come not to do Mine own will" (John vi. 38)."My teaching is not Mine" (John vii. 16)."I am not come of Myself" (John vii. 28)."I do nothingof Myself" (John viii. 28)."I have not come of Myself, but He sent Me " (John viii. 42)."I seek not Mine own glory " (John viii.It was the very Spirit of Christ and His relation to the DisciplesHe was constantly serving themHe was a Servant to them in washing their feet
He became Poor 2:5-7
He did not think that being God was something to take advantage of - and so he left it emptied himself is the thought in this passage
Made Himself of no reputation can be translated He emptied Himself. Charles Wesley wrote in that beautiful hymn And Can It Be
He left his Father's throne above
(so free, so infinite his grace!),
emptied himself of all but love,
and bled for Adam's helpless race.
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for O my God, it found out me!
Notice the theological soundness of Charles Wesley, He never even hints that He left his power. Christ became man, but He was still God His attributes, power, and might were simply veiled by His flesh.
What Did He Leave – His Royalty – If we could get a glimpse at the glory and splendor of heaven we might be able to understand this. He was the Son of God and was and is and will forever be for eons and eons but for a short span of time, He left His royalty behind, left His Palace as it were behind.Made himself of no reputation – Simply means he was humbleHe humbled himselfTook on the form of a servantTook on the likeness of men and was found in the fashion like a manRemember Even though He exchanged the outward form of God for that of a human slave, He never stopped being “very God of very God,” as the old creed expressed it. Defender Study BibleHis Recognition – John 1:10-11 The world knew Him not, and His own received Him not” But Dear Simion and Anna knew who He wasJohn The Baptist knew who he was (Even before he was born)The Wise men Knew who He wasThe Shepherds knew who He wasHe knew who He wasCompared to the masses of people he was unknown as His true identityHis Wealth – Again we would need to understand the wealth and grandure of Heaven. When we think of Heaven now as described by John the Revelator what people are scrambling for right now, the Chineese and the country of India are stockpiling Gold is used as paving material. He never had to endure pain, suffering, agony, loneliness, doubt, lack of faith, sin, a body that aged or even death. He left his wealth behind. The songwriter sums it up when they wrote, “ He left it all, Not His robe, Not His crown, Not Ten- thousand bowing down | Not one piece of Jasper wall| He left it allWhy Did He Leave – One word - US!!!
He became Obedient -2:8
To obey means to act upon the command of another. In the Greek it is also translated to listen or to hear. I remember as a child when we were going to visit someone or go somewhere, there were six children for Mom to keep track of and we usually got a "talking to" before we arrived often in the car on the way to the event. Don't touch anything, if they give you anything you can take it and say thanks, or say no thanks, don't be loud, or run around, If this was a store it might be and keep your hands in your pockets. Often these commands were followed with the phrase, "Do you hear me?" It is hard to obey something you do not understand and she was trying to make sure we understood exactly what she was saying.
Jesus understood exactly what was being asked of him, what it would require, what it would take of him, and yet he did it.
The Obedience of ChristJesus "LEARNED" ObedienceHe learned obedience according to Hebrews 5:8 through sufferingNot like parents who inflict punishment or pain from disobedience to help the child remember not to disobey again, but rather Jesus' obedience came at a cost (which it always does)Remember the first sermon in this series, he was rejected, despised, ignored, thought of as foolish and crazy, hated all because he was obedientJesus WAS Obedient - All the time - not one time was Jesus ever disobedient to his heavenly calling. Even when faced with the desparate hope of another route if that is what it was in the Garden of Gethemene when he prayed for another way, he even submitted by praying, Nevertheless, not my will but thine be done.
UHJ<"I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me." (John 5:30)
Was obedient even to death - Paul says, obedient even unto the death of the cross.
Dr. J.H. Jowett has said, "Ministry that costs nothing accomplishes nothing." If there is to be any blessing, there must be some "bleeding." At a religious festival in Brazil, a missionary was going from booth to booth, examining the wares. He saw a sign above one booth: "Cheap Crosses." He thought to himself, "That's what many Christians are looking for these days—cheap crosses. My Lord's cross was not cheap. Why should mine be?"
Bible Exposition Commentary (BE Series) - New Testament - The Bible Exposition Commentary – New Testament, Volume 2.
He became Exalted 2:9-11
Paul is telling the church at Philippi that We have a Savior that has been exalted. Lifted up, glorified One thing we must understand is that Jesus had to be abased before he could be exalted, he had to stoop low before he could be raised high. It is this humbling that allows for his exaltation. The beginning of this passage talks about how Jesus became humbled, poor, obedient - he laid aside all of his splendor, power and glory. But it seems when he takes it up again that he has in a sense received more glory and honor than before. This is why in John's revelation as he looked upon that great scroll the title deed of Earth that he wept and cried as they looked all over the earth John wasn't worthy to loose the seals, they looked all over heaven, none of the great patriarches passed the test, The list of those in the great hall of faith were brought up, no none of them could open it, they looked at the Father, and he shook his head, they looked to the Holy Spirit who withdrew himself, finally one speaks up, that there is one the Lamb who has been slain, he is worthy to open the seals. He has been exalted, glorified,
The Single Source of His Exaltation - There is only one source of Jesus exaltation.
God the Father - This exaltation was given by God the Father - "Wherefore (or therefore) God also hath highly exalted him. I like that phrase "Highly Exalted" in the Greek it is expressed in the word,
"ὑπερυψόω hoop-er-oop-so'-o " meaning "super exalted...hyper- exalted." It uses the preposition huper as a prefix from which we get hyper, super exalted, hyper exalted. And it has the idea that in a moment of redemptive history God highly exalted Christ, lifted Him up.
The Fourfold Type of Exaltation - This exaltation was fourfold
ResurrectionProved the validity of His sacrificeReinforced what Jesus said on the Cross - "It is finished" Just to help enrich this a little I want to share some scripture - Peter preaching at Pentecost said, " Acts 2:32-33 (KJV) This Jesus God raised again." 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. This is both Resurrection he was exalted, and coronation He went to sit on the Father's throne.Later in Acts we find Peter and the Apostles preaching and they declare Acts 5:30-31 (KJV) 30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. 31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. Raised up Jesus - that resurrectionHim hath God exalted with his right hand… - CoronationAnd again Paul in Ephesians 4:8-10 (KJV) 8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. 9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
AscensionAllowed him to sit at the right-hand of the Father Another place says "He sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on High."
Coronation
IntercessionHe ever lives to intercede for all who come to Him
The Exclusive Title of His Exaltation
A Special Name - Verse 9 Paul tells us that God gave his son a name that is above every other name. I don't really think it is refering to the name we use, the name "Jesus" although that is a very powerful and special name. - News story of Christian Woman using the Name of Jesus to survive a terrorist attack in JerusalemI think this is a name above every name. The name above everything in the English language is Lord or Sovereign. God gave him a name that is above every other name. In the Greek it is the work kurios Lord. The passage continues that at this name given to Jesus - whatever it is, that everyone is going to bow in homage and submission to it someday. It is very specific - that every knee will bow, Of things in heaven - that is not a big surprise - already the Angels bow before Him, and sing His praises. But think of that thousands time ten thousands and thousands of thousands of the angelic host, will bow before him, the seraphim, the cherubim, the heavenly host will bow their knee to this exalted one. But just think someday when we all get home, what a time that is going to be, when we gather around his throne - I just wonder if maybe instead of jumping to our feet, if when Fredrick Handel starts his Hallelujah Chorus if we won't fall on our faces before Him, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords Of things in earth - Men and women who have refused to give in to the pleadings and promptings of God, have stiffened their necks and hardened their hearts, will fall on their faces before him whom they have pierced. And it doesn't stop there, but even the things under the earth - the demons, the fallen angels, the devil - they will have to one day writhing no doubt in broken pride and hatred but having no choice but to concede to fall on their knees to this mighty conqueror. The story is told of Julian the Apostate an extremely wicked Roman emporer - a nephew to Constatine, but rejected Christ and severely persecuted the Christians. at the end of his life in Ad 363 he was in a battle against the Persians, was hit by an arrow in the conflict. It is reported that in his last waning breath he said, "Thou Galilean hast prevailed." He had lost his war against Christ. That is kind of what I expect it will be when Satan who has taunted the saints, twisted God's plan every chance he could, rebelled in his pride and arrogance, will one day fall on his knees before him and the Bible says, Confess him as LORD that name above all names.
O Come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord
For he alone is worthy, for he alone is worthy, for He alone is worthy, Christ the Lord
