ADVENT 2020
November 29 – HOPE CANDLE
Jesus’ coming on that Bethlehem morning brought hope to the world. We light the hope candle this morning to remind us that Jesus is our hope. Romans 15:13 (NKJV) Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
December 6 – PEACE CANDLE
Jesus’s coming promises peace to a world that has only known discord, division and hate. As the newborn Christ lay sleeping in the manger, the angels sang “peace on earth, goodwill toward men.” And for a moment the world knew peace. Christmas reminds us there is coming a King in Jesus our Lord who will finally bring peace to our world, the One who now brings peace to our hearts. As we light the candle of peace we remember Jesus is our peace.
Revelation 1:4 (NKJV) Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come…..
December 13 – JOY CANDLE
Luke 2:8-11, And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
The third Sunday of Advent reminds us to celebrate the reality that Christ brings true and everlasting joy.
This third Sunday of Advent, we light the Joy Candle which is the pink or rose-colored candle. It is often pink or rose because it is also known as the Candle of Mary the Mother of Jesus.
When the angel Gabriel told Mary that a special child would be born to her she was filled with joy. She sang a song that began with the words: "My soul magnifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.” Luke 1:46-47
So the third Sunday of Advent reminds us that when Jesus is born in us we have joy and that through Hm there will be everlasting joy on earth.
As we look at this candle, we are reminded that Jesus is our joy at Christmas!
December 20 – LOVE CANDLE
On this fourth Sunday of Advent we light the Candle of love. And we are reminded of the Love of God for the world and for each of us.
John 3:16 (NKJV) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
1 John 4:9–11 (NLT) 9 God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 10 This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.
We will also light the final candle of the Advent wreath today as well. It is the tallest and most magnificent candle of the Advent wreath. It the white candle which is also the central candle of the Advent wreath. All other candles, the candle of hope, of peace, of joy, and of love, all emanate from this most important center candle, and it is the Christ candle.
Remember the words of the angels the night of our Savior’s birth found in Luke 2:11, For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord!
As we light the Christ candle, we remember one final time that Jesus who is the Christ is also our hope, our peace, our joy and He is love!
