1. The Principles of Love
1. The Principles of Love
v11 Command to love
This is the message of love.
v12 Contrast to hate
Cain hated and killed his brother, his works were evil
v13 We will be hated
The world who does not love, hates you because you are like Able and they are like Cain
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
v14 The sign that we are believers and saved is how we love one another.
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.
v15 Hate leads to murder, it is murder from the heart
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
v16 Ultimate show of love
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
v17 We ought to do the same
And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Outlines for Growing Christians 31. The Importance of Love (1 John 3:11–24)
If we have plenty and do not help others in need, then the love of God is not in us. Love always gives
2. The confident of love
2. The confident of love
v19 Our love shows us that we are on the side of truth, our hearts and be confident in this.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
v20 When we condemn ourselves, God’s truth will reassure us.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
v21 When there is no condemnation there is peace
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
v22 If we live in the truth by loving one another we are essentially living out the commandments and therefore can ask anything from God.
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
v23 What is the commandment that we are keeping? To believe in Chirst and to love one another
First 4 are about relating to God, last 5 are about relating to others.
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make idols.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.
v24 Continue improving your walk with Christ
Keeping his commandments shows that we are living in Him and with Him and the He lives in us.
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
With Gods love we are able to do what we thought impossible, we can overlook offenses, we can endure persecution, we can forgive and we can live a life of freedom from the prison of hate.
“You’ve Never Met a Mere Mortal “It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilization—these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit—immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.” C.S. Lewis The Weight of Glory
How can we better demonstrate love for each other?
Asking for a commitment to be more loving toward one another.
