Jesus’ disciples were given to Him by the Father to be one as Jesus is one with the Father. 6-12

John 17:6–12 NIV
6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
Vs 6
His disciples were given to Him out of the world
They already belonged to the Father
They obeyed God’s word
Vs 7
Everything Jesus had came from the Father
Vs 8
Jesus only taught and gave what had been given to Him
The disciples accepted those teachings
They finally believed that God sent Jesus
Vs 9
Jesus is praying for them specifically
Not praying for the entire population of the world, but praying for those given to him.
Vs 10
The Father and Jesus have dual ownership in everything.
Glory included - glory that was revealed to the disciples and in turn displayed through the actions of the disciples
vs 11
Since Jesus is about to leave this physical world, Jesus prayed for:
Protection for the disciples
By the power of God’s name, the name given to Jesus
Indicates a spiritual protection
protection from falling away
Protection from the evil one.
Unity
They may be one as we are one
One with each other
One with Jesus => One with the Father
vs 12
Jesus protected His disciples and kept them safe
By/in the name that God game Him - Jesus
Only one was lost - He was doomed to destruction
Not just physical, but spiritual destruction
Judas gave in to evil (and the betrayal had not yet happened…)
Happened to fulfill prophecy:
John 13:18 NIV
18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’
Psalm 41:9 NIV
9 Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me.
Jesus prays that his disciples would be protected spiritually from the evil one so they would operate and live in unity with one another. What does disunity in Spirit look like:
I want my way.
Unity in the Spirit:
I want God’s way.
POINT 1
Pray like Jesus for the protection and unity of fellow disciples. Not that we would agree to any man’s way, but that we would be in agreement about God’s way.

Jesus was not of the world, yet he was in the world - so should we be. 13-16

John 17:13–16 NIV
13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
Vs 13
Jesus is headed home, but wanted them to hear this prayer so they would have the full measure of the Joy within Jesus within them.
Vs 14
The world hated the disciples for the word given them
The word spoke against the powers of the world
The word challenged thinking and actions
The word made the world uncomfortable
As disciples of Jesus, they were new creations in Christ and therefore no longer of or from the world. They were not of/from Jesus.
Who we are from denotes our inheritance. Being of/from Jesus grants us a heavenly inheritance. Being of/from the world gets us hell.
Just like Jesus was not of/from the world, nor are we.
Vs 15
Jesus did not pray for our circumstance to change. In fact he said he wasn’t praying for that.
Prayer is for protection from the evil one while we are still IN the world.
Jesus knew what was coming for his disciples. They would be arrested, jailed for long periods of time, persecuted, beaten, scattered and all but John was executed.
He did not pray they would not see those things the world would inflict upon them. He prayed for their spiritual protection. He prayed that his disciples would stay the course and not be of/from the world while they were in the world.
POINT 2
Pray like Jesus for each other’s spiritual protection. Pray that we would resist the temptation to be of the world and not just in it.

We are sanctified by truth and sent into the world. 17-18

John 17:17–18 NIV
17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.
Vs 17
Sanctify means to set apart as holy.
Jesus is here praying that God would set apart his disciples as holy. To ensure their dedication to holiness
Sanctification happens by truth
Truth is the word of God
In our hands we have the truth
It is only by reading this do we get truth.
Truth is the only means to sanctification - to being set apart for holiness.
Sanctification is not always a pleasant process. It requires seeing truth in contrast to the lie we believe or are acting out of.
Vs 18
Jesus was sent by God into the world.
Jesus had a mission to fulfill
Jesus sent us into the world
We have a mission to fulfill
Matthew 28:18–20 NIV
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Acts 1:7–8 NIV
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
This is our mission
Jesus ends his prayer for his disciples in these 2 verses. He says Father, make them holy by the truth of your word as I send them into the world on mission.
POINT 3
Pray like Jesus for each other’s sanctification. Pray that the word of truth would pierce our hearts and change us. Pray that we all would accept the call to be sent into the world as beacons of holiness and truth. The truth that says to the world: “You are unworthy of love, but God loves you anyway.”
Let’s recap how we can pray for each other like Jesus prayed:
POINT 1
Pray like Jesus for the protection and unity of fellow disciples. Not that we would agree to any man’s way, but that we would be in agreement about God’s way.
POINT 2
Pray like Jesus for each other’s spiritual protection. Pray that we would resist the temptation to be of the world and not just in it.
POINT 3
Pray like Jesus for each other’s sanctification. Pray that the word of truth would pierce our hearts and change us. Pray that we all would accept the call to be sent into the world as beacons of holiness and truth. The truth that says to the world: “You are unworthy of love, but God loves you anyway.”
John 17:1–26 NIV
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
