Introduction

One of the most heralded patriarchs of the nation of Israel is non other than King David.
Why King David? A man after God’s own heart
Pat Dirrim states
“A man after God’s own heart isn’t perfect. That simply isn’t possible! A man after God’s own heart won’t necessarily avoid significant and grievous sins that may massively impact future generations. A man after God’s own heart is one who seeks to actively live in obedience to God while being captivated by the beauty, sufficiency, and necessity of God and is one who responds properly when confronted with his sin. It is this that distinguishes David from Saul and David from most other people.”
And that is Jesus

Obedient

Romans 1:3–6 ESV
3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,
Philippians 2:8 ESV
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Dependent

Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Repentant

1 John 1:8–9 ESV
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Transition To Body

The people of God, Israel, had been waiting in the long awaited Messiah- the king, son of David
The anointed one
John 1:41 ESV
41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
The very first verse gives the direction to the author’s purpose for writing: to establish Jesus’ identity as the Messiah, heir to the promises of Israel’s throne through King David and heir to the promises of the blessing to all the nations through the patriarch Abraham. - Wilkins, Michael J.. The NIV Application Commentary: Matthew (p. 20). Zondervan Academic. Kindle Edition.
Jesus Christ (Messiah) the righteous heir to the throne of David- bring into context of 2 Samuel 7:1-20 or 1 Chronicles 17:1-27
But what is it about Jesus that makes Him the Messiah, the anointed one, the Christ?

Body- Jesus Christ (Son of David) because Jesus is

The Christ Who Saves People

(save His people from what? from their sins) (Jesus means LORD save us)

The Christ Who Seeks People

Matthew 1:23 ESV
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
(is Immanuel =God with us)- came to his own
Zacchaeus was seeking Jesus?
Luke 19:3 ESV
3 And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature.
Luke 19:9 ESV
9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.
Luke 19:10 ESV
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

The Christ Whom His People Worship

Worship- to express in attitude or gesture one’s complete dependence on or submission to a high authority figure, (fall down and) worship, do obeisance to, prostrate oneself before, do reverence to, welcome respectfully
used to designate the custom of prostrating oneself before persons and kissing their feet or the hem of their garment, the ground, etc.; the Persians did this in the presence of their deified king, and the Greeks before a divinity or someth. holy
to human beings, but by this act they are to be recognized as belonging to a superhuman realm
Matthew 2:2 ESV
2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
Matthew 2:10–11 ESV
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
(and Jesus are not always who we expect them to be) with exceedingly great joy
Romans 12:1 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 ESV
16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

The Christ Who Converts People

Matthew 4:17 ESV
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
(Repent = feel remorse, repent, be converted)

Conversion Experience

John 3:3 ESV
3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Illustration: A Knight’s Tale
Redeemed by the King’s Son
Knight's Tale is a 2001 British-American medieval adventure comedy film written, produced, and directed by Brian Helgeland. The film stars Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon, Mark Addy, Alan Tudyk, Rufus Sewell, Laura Fraser, Paul Bettany as Geoffrey Chaucer, and James Purefoy as Sir Thomas Colville/Edward the Black Prince.
The story is told in an anachronistic style with many modern references. It follows a peasant named William who poses as a knight and competes in tournaments, winning accolades and acquiring friendships with such historical figures as Edward the Black Prince and Geoffrey Chaucer.
Edward of Woodstock, known to history as the Black Prince (15 June 1330 – 8 June 1376),[1][a] was the eldest son of King Edward III of England, and the heir to the English throne. He died before his father and so his son, Richard II, succeeded to the throne instead. Edward nevertheless earned distinction as one of the most successful English commanders during the Hundred Years' War, being regarded by his English contemporaries as a model of chivalry and one of the greatest knights of his age.
Some of you have tried to be somebody that you really weren’t
The devil your arch nemesis tries to destroy me
But if it had not been for the grace of God
If it had not been for the LORD on our side
But son came and redeemed you

King David said in

Psalm 28:8–9 ESV
8 The Lord is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed. 9 Oh, save your people and bless your heritage! Be their shepherd and carry them forever.
Psalm 124:1–3 ESV
1 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side— let Israel now say— 2 if it had not been the Lord who was on our side when people rose up against us, 3 then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us;

Jesus Was Sent To Save

John 3:16–17 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Jesus Came To His Own

John 1:11–13 ESV
11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Jesus We Worship

Psalm 100:1 ESV
1 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

Jesus Converts

Philippians 2:5 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,

Jesus is LORD

Matthew 22:42–45 ESV
42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, 44 “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet” ’? 45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”

Jesus Christ We Preach

2 Timothy 2:8–13 ESV
8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.

Jesus Reigns Forever

Revelation 19:1–6 ESV
1 After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, 2 for his judgments are true and just; for he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality, and has avenged on her the blood of his servants.” 3 Once more they cried out, “Hallelujah! The smoke from her goes up forever and ever.” 4 And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, “Amen. Hallelujah!” 5 And from the throne came a voice saying, “Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great.” 6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.
