O. Henry, in his book “The Gift of the Magi”, tells the story of Jim and Della. They were a young married couple who were very poor. Their first Christmas together they did not have money for gifts to give to each other. Della was known for her beauty and her long beautiful hair. She longed to have a beautiful comb to place in her hair. Jim only had one prized possession. He had inherited a gold watch from his grandfather. The watch did not have a chain for him to be able to attach it to his clothing to keep it safe. In order to buy Christmas gifts for each other Jim sells his watch to buy combs for Della’s hair. Della sold her hair to buy a chain for Jim’s watch. They each made a huge sacrifice for the other.
Most of us have made sacrifices to buy gifts for those we love this Christmas. No matter how great the sacrifice you have made , none of us sacrificed as much as Jesus did for us.
Jesus is God. He stepped out of heaven to take on flesh. The Creator took on the form of his creation. He emptied himself to become flesh. And as if that was not a big enough sacrifice he lived a humble life and then died a death he did not deserve.
John 15:13
13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
Romans 3:23
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Every gift that is presented to leaves you with a choice. A choice on whether you will receive the gift. God loves us. He does not force his gift upon us. He offers the gift to us freely.
Romans 10:13
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
