Paul is dealing with the use and abuse of spiritual gifts. The Corinthians seemed to have a special problem with the gift of tongues, the underlying problem had to do with their attitude, i.e. their desire for self-advancement.

Question: How should the congregation use the member’s spiritual gifts?

Gifts are under the control of the user!

There are 9 gifts mentioned in this chapter

1. word of wisdom 2. word of knowledge 3. faith 4. healings 5. miracles 6. prophecy 7. discerning of spirits 8. tongues 9. interpretation of tongues

Compare these gifts to the ones claimed by faith healers today. Which ones do they claim to have today?

Modern day miracle workers do not have the truth. We know this for various reasons:

1 Cor 13, Inconsistencies, not real miracles

Lessons:

Abuse of these gifts would have been prevented if they considered the purpose for which they were given.

Abuse would be prevented if they had thought of their brother or sister when exercising the gift.

Miracles do not prevent problems.
