Put on the Armour and what?
Let’s start with a simple survey
What comes to your mind immediately if someone were to say to you,
“Quick, put on your armour and
(1) Fight!
(2) Hide?!
(3) Stand and be a light?
Romans 13:12–13 NIV
12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.
Explain it:
We are in a spiritual warfare, we need to be disciplined as a soldier
2 Timothy 2:3–4 NIV
3 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.
We are to be disciplined and vigilant against the evil one like a soldier. Also single-minded about pleasing our commanding officer.
But this is as far as the analogy goes. We are not to take up actual arm ....
Crusades -
The amour of God is also the armour of light, put on christ.
The language is all the same, it’s about living with the gospel.
Therefore, we are asked to put on the full armour of God and make a stand for the gospel of light.
Paul goes on to say that
Ephesians 6:11–12 NIV
11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
If it is the devil and his forces, let’s remind ourselves who we are dealing with
Remember the first series this year we started with
Revelation 12:1–6 NIV
1 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2 She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. 3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. 4 Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.” And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. 6 The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.
The dragon is symbolic of Satan. He is the usurper of the rightful kingdom of the King’s Son.
That’s who Satan is. He deceives us. He lies and he kills.
Therefore we are asked to take our stand against him.
Jesus has already defeated him on the cross.
And now, we are to take our stand in Jesus
We take stand when we stand for Truth
Stand firm then with the belt of truth
Let our hearts be protected by Christ’s righteousness
Seek peace
Faith - confidence of God’s fatherly goodness
Assurance of Salvation
Word of God - the sword of the spirit
And finally
Pray in the spirit.
