INTRODUCTION
Thank you for your prayers this week.
You can’t drive through OKC without being reminded of the worst event in OKC history.
April 19, 1995 - Timothy McVeigh parked a Ryder Truck full of explosives in front of the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building
168 people died.
-Survivor Tree in Oklahoma City- thousands of trees around the world have come from the seedlings of that tree. Symbol of resilience and hope.
Jesus is pictured here as coming from lineage of David. David’s line had lost earthly reign, it returns in Jesus from the stump of Jesse.
READ Isaiah 11:1-9
1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.
6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.
7 The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den.
9 They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

4 Characteristics of the Messiah
Humanity of Messiah (1)
Humanity of Messiah (1)
Isaiah 11:1
1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
Stump of Jesse
ILL- the shoot out of a yucca plant.
Cut it down to get rid of it.
Davidic rule had been cut down by God through judgment.
But through the stump arises a shoot.
Jesus was both man and God.
Mary- from lineage of David.
God- no sinful nature- a new Adam.
Curse of sin flows through seed of man.
Jesus was like Adam- without the curse of sin.
1 Corinthians 15:45-49
45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
46 But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual.
47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven.
48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven.
49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.
1 Corinthians 15:22
22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
Power of Messiah (2)
Power of Messiah (2)
Isaiah 11:2
2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
How did Jesus live as a man? He lived with the power of God through the Holy Spirit
Baptism of Jesus- Holy Spirit descended upon him as a dove.
Description of Holy Spirit. - verse 2 (each line pairs two words together that are related.)
Spirit of wisdom and understanding
Correct use of information.
someone who has memorized the whole phone book is not necessarily who you ask to help you understand impacts of world events.
Spirit of counsel and might
(advise giver and power to live it)
Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
Proverbs 1:7
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
if Jesus needed Holy Spirit, how much more do we?
Disciples told to wait and do nothing, until the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Then they went to the streets and 3,000 were saved in one day.
Justice of Messiah (3-5)
Justice of Messiah (3-5)
Isaiah 11:3-5
3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.
Jesus as Judge
Fears the Lord
Refers to his source of moral direction for justice.
All-Knowing (3b)- Justice is based on what he knows- no need for witnesses.
Righteous (4-5)- judges based on his own righteousness- he is the standard.
“rod of his mouth”= Word of God- speaks truth- pierces heart.
His Character (5)
Righteous
Faithful
Jesus satisfies God’s need for justice. - The Judge pays the price for the guilty.

Genesis 3:14-15

15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Seed of the woman will crush the head of Satan.
Jesus was of the seed of woman without the curse of sin passed on by the male.
He crushed Satan’s head= took away his power- Died for our sin.
