Introduction
Isaiah, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, makes “A Glorious Announcement” about the birth of Jesus Christ and His predicted future in these verses, and this will be the topic of the message today.
In just one verse; verse 6, we have the perfect proof of the deity of the Messiah, the doctrine of the incarnation, which happened to be the stumbling block for the Jewish people who don’t believe.
We are introduced to a surprising conqueror who works the victory of verses 1-5. He is revealed to be a child given, a son born, and He is described unforgettably.
The Delight in the Announcement
The Delight in the Announcement
“…unto us a child is born...”
There is a delight here in this statement! A child’s birth brings much delight to many people.
Think about this...
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
What we read of in Luke 2 is just a fulfillment of what we are looking at today in Isaiah!
The angel tells the shepherds that he has come from Heaven to deliver a message of good news that will produce great joy for them and for the entire world.
He came to deliver a message the world had been waiting to hear for four thousand years. Ever since man sinned in the Garden of Eden, the world has been groaning under the curse brought about by that sin. Back on that dark day God made a promise. He promised Adam and Eve that one day a woman would bear a Son and that Son would defeat the power of sin and the serpent.
The phrase "I bring good tidings" is from the Greek word that forms our English words evangelistic or evangelize. To evangelize means "to bring good tidings." The tidings of the birth of Christ was great, delightful, news for the world.
The Duty in the Announcement
The Duty in the Announcement
“…unto us...”
Notice that this set of two words is repeated twice in this text…This glorious announcement was about God giving to “us” a wonderful person! And the the fact of “unto us” brings obligation.
We have a choice, there’s two things right here…Accept Him or reject Him.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
We have a duty to do and unfortunately many reject Christ.
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
To reject Christ will condemn you for all eternity! Don’t neglect your duty today!
The Doctrine in the Announcement
The Doctrine in the Announcement
“…a child is born…a son is given...”
This text speaks of both the Deity and humanity of Christ in one verse. The humanity is in “child is born.” The Deity is in “son is given.”
The phrase “a child is born,” identifies Him as a man. The baby Mary brought into the world over 2,000 years ago was fully human. He knew pain, sorrow, loss, grief, hunger, thirst, weariness, and suffering.
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
This reminds us that through the virgin birth incarnation, God Almighty became human,
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
The phrase “a son is given,” identifies Him as God. God did not come to this world a fully grown man; He came as a helpless infant. But, that baby was God! He was given so that we might be redeemed from our sins and born again into the family of God.
He was the greatest gift that’s ever been given...
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
We know these truths. We believe these truths. We celebrate these truths. The Bible is clear that God in human flesh is an absolutely indispensable foundational truth of our faith. Without God being a man, the death and resurrection of the Christ means nothing.
And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
Thank God today that He did rise, and because He is risen, His sacrifice means everything. It means the innocent died for the guilty, and that sinners can be saved, if they will come to Jesus Christ by faith.
We see a bit of a division in this verse…The first part has come to pass, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:” This speaks of His first coming, but the next part speaks of His Second Coming!
The Bible is clear that He is coming again! That’s His promise!
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
It’s pretty clear today, He’s coming back!
And when He does, “…the government shall be upon his shoulder...”
This brings us to our next point...
The Dominion in the Announcement
The Dominion in the Announcement
“…the government shall be upon his shoulder...”
This phrase encompasses two great truths.
• First, this “son that was given”, Who died on the cross, would rise again! And we know from Scripture that’s exactly what He did.
• Second, this phrase takes us many years into the future when this risen One comes again to this earth to reign in glory upon the earth!
• The second advent of Jesus is in view here. He is returning to this world, not as “the Lamb of God”, but as “the Lion of the tribe of Judah”. He is returning, not to die but to reign; not to suffer, but to put down evil and to rule the world!
• The first time, He came as a Savior to die, the next time, He will come as a King to conquer,
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus said in:
Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
We are called out of this world and into the kingdom of Heaven.
When Jesus returns, He will come as a King to rule. This is clear in the Word of God!
And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
He is coming ya’ll, and when He does, He is going to establish an eternal kingdom!
All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord;
And thy saints shall bless thee.
They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom,
And talk of thy power;
To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts,
And the glorious majesty of his kingdom.
Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
And thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
One day, the Lord Jesus will occupy the throne of David. He will rule in righteousness, power and glory. When He does, the world will be transformed by His power.
