Genesis 22:1-14

Introduction

Color by numbers story…

Often OT scripture can have a double meaning.

There are many wonderful lessons in this story.

Ø      Lessons about faith

Ø      Lessons about family

Ø      Lessons about obedience

Ø      Lessons about trust

Ø      Lessons about God’s faithfulness

Today we are going to focus on the prophetic message.

This was a dress rehearsal for Calvary!

Ø      Abraham and Isaac picture the relationship between God the Father and His son Jesus Christ.

1A.      Moriah was a Planned Event.

1B.      It took place for a planned purpose.  (22:1-2)

God tested Abraham; He proved Abraham’s faith.

Psalm 26:2 Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; Try my mind and my heart.

2B.      It involved a planned place.  (22:3, 4)

Moriah is the same mountain as Calvary.

2 Chronicles 3:1 Now Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

3B.      It came at a planned time.  (22:5-6)

Isaac was 33 years old.

Ø      A small boy would not have been able to carry the wood.

Ø      In Genesis 23 Sarah dies she is 127 years old, Isaac would have been 37.

Ø      In Genesis 24, Isaac marries Rebekah.

Jesus was 33 years old

Acts 2:23 "Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;

Romans 5:6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

4B.      It involved a planned person.

Isaac was Abraham’s only son.  (22:2, 12)

Jesus is God’s only son.  (John 3:16)

2A.      Moriah was a Prepared Event.

1B.      Worship was the motive behind the event.  (22:5)

Worship always precedes service.

Worship requires obedience and sacrifice.

2B.      The wood pictures the cross.  (22:6a)

Isaac bore the wood upon which he would be sacrificed.

Jesus did the same.

John 19:17 And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha,

3B.      The offering was to be provided by God.  (22:7-8)

Isaac looked for the lamb.

Jesus became the lamb.

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

4B.      The bindings were placed on the son by the Father.  (22:9)

Isaac was bound by his father because of his sin.

Jesus was bound by his Father because of our sin.

1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,

5B.      The shedding of blood was essential.  (22:10)

The sacrifice would bleed to death.

Hebrews 9:22 “And …without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”

6B.      The fire represents God’s judgment on sin.  (22:6)

The fire represents the cleansing power of God’s judgment on sin.

On the cross the fire of God’s wrath was poured upon Christ.

7B.      The redeemer came from an unexpected place in an unexpected way.  (22:12-14)

Isaac was saved by God’s grace.

Jesus became our Savior by God’s grace.

8B.      The resurrection was a certainty of faith.  (22:5)

Hebrews 11:19 concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

Ephesians 1:19-20 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,

9B.      The return involved a bride.

Ø      The next time we see Isaac he is receiving his bride.  (Genesis 24:62-67)

Ø      The next time we see Jesus he will be receiving His bride.

Revelation 19:7 "Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready."

3A.      Moriah was a Powerful Event.

1B.      Powerful, because of what it demonstrated.

Moriah proved Abraham’s love for God.

Calvary proved God’s love for us.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

2B.      Powerful, because of what it destroyed.

Moriah eliminated any worship of Isaac.

Calvary eliminated the dominion of sin.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

3B.      Powerful, because of what it determined.

From Isaac God would raise up His people Israel.

From Jesus God would raise up His people the church.

Application

Where is God?

Two little boys are sent to the Pastor.  Pastor asks the first, “Tommy do you know where God is?”  He goes out and tells his friend, “We are really in trouble, they have lost God and are trying to blame it on us.”

Where is the Lamb in your life?

This is a planned time.

This is a prepared time.

This is a powerful time.
