INTRODUCTION

Background

Israel is at war

Ø      They were challenged

Ø      They must choose

Ø      They were cowards

They faced and incredible Enemy

They were overwhelmed

Parallel

We are at war in our lives

Ø      Family - too many demands not enough resources

Ø      Work - we seem to live only to work

Ø      Church - instead of helping us the church becomes another hand reaching into our already empty pockets of time.

We face and incredible Enemy

Ø      Self, sin and Satan

Many of us feel overwhelmed!

Is there an answer?

2B.      His Power (17:5-7)

He had six pieces of armor

Ø      Helmet, armor, leg greaves, javelin, spear, and armor bearer

Ø      He was the best armed and best trained solider of his day.

3B.      His Purpose (17:10)

To Defy God's Plan of salvation and security

To Defeat God's People

4B.      His Persistence (17:16)

Forty is the number of testing

Ø      The Flood, 40 days and nights.  (Genesis 7)

Ø      The length of time Moses was in Midian, 40 years.  (Acts 7:30, Exodus 2-3)

Ø      The confirmation of the Covenant, 40 days and nights  (Exodus 24)

Ø      The Ten Commandments, 40 days, and nights.  (Exodus 34)

Ø      Israel was in the wilderness, 40 years.  (Numbers 14).

Ø      The length of time God gave Nineveh to repent, 40 days.  (Jonah 3)

Ø      Jesus fast in the wilderness, 40 days.  (Matthew 4)

Ø      The length of time Jesus appeared on earth after the resurrection, 40 days.  (Acts 1)

2A.      A Vicarious Encounter: David pictures Jesus

1B.      He Was the Chosen One (16:13; 17:8-10)

Luke 3:22 (NASB) 22and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

2B.      He Was the Sent One (17:17)

Matthew 1:21 (NASB) 21“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

3B.      He Was the Scorned One (17:28)

Luke 23:11 (NASB) 11And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate.

Luke 23:35-36 (NASB) 35And the people stood by, looking on.  And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.”  36The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine,

4B.      He Was the Saving One

1 Corinthians 15:57 (NASB) 57but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

3A.      A Victorious Example

1B.      David's Preparation (17:15)

He won the big battle because he was faithful in the small places

Luke 16:10 (NASB) 10“He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much.

You are what you really are in the small and secret things.

2B.      David's Perspective (17:26)

The world's eyes were on Goliath

David's eyes were on God

Glance at the problem, Gaze at God

Ø      The world said that Goliath was too big to hit.  David said he is too big to miss.

3B.      David's Purpose (17:32)

He declared war on the enemy

Ø      Have you ever declared war on Hell?

Things that keep us from declaring our own war on Sin and Satan…

Ø      Disdain of your brothers (17:28)

Ø      Discouragement of experts (17:33)

Ø      Defeat of others (17:24)

Fear of man made Saul a coward; but the fear of God made David a hero

4B.      David's Progression (17:34-36)

One victory leads to another.

Ø      "We fight not for victory, but from victory."

5B.      David's Protection (17:37-40)

Invisible

Invincible

2 Corinthians 10:4 (NASB) 4for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.

6B       David's Power (17:42-45)

"in the name of the LORD..."

Key is authority not might

7B.      David's Praise (17:46-47)

"There is a God in Israel"

"the LORD saves..."

It took place before the battle!
