THE Answer to Man’s discouragement
The Miracles of the Master – Part 1 of 7
John 2:1-11
INTRODUCTION
It is a privilege and joy to be with you this week. I bring you greetings from the Grace Community Church in Pittsburgh PA, USA. My name is Timothy McGhee; I am the Pastor/Teacher of our church. It is my prayer that our Lord will allow us to overcome the barriers of language and culture so that we may worship Him together. Thank you for your hospitality and warm welcome.
I will be preaching from the gospel of John during our time together. I have entitled our study “The Miracles of the Master.” John 20:30-31 (NASB) “30Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” The word “signs” is used to emphasize the value or significance of the mighty work. These miracles show us the power and ministry of our Lord.
Tonight we will study John 2:1-11. We have all been discouraged and down? We have all felt that there was no hope, that life was too hard? Jesus shows us in this passage His power to transform our lives from the natural to the supernatural. He gives us hope and teaches us some important lessons.brb
1A. The Prophetic Lesson
This miracle speaks of the coming of Christ. First it tells of…
1B. The Messiah they did not recognize
Jesus Christ was indeed their Messiah. John 1:24-26 (NASB) 24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26John answered them saying, “I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.
2B. The miracle they did not understand
The people at the wedding saw only the physical results of the miracle; they completely missed the spiritual meaning of the miracle. Too often we see only the physical or outward result of God’s grace we do not understand that Jesus came to change us not just our situation. God wants to change you not just your circumstances.
3B The marriage that they missed (John 2:1)
This wedding is a picture of the coming wedding between Christ and His bride, the church. One day, perhaps soon, the Lord will come for all those who have repented of their sin and placed their faith in Christ. And we will join him is a wedding feast. Revelation 19:7-9 (NASB) 7“Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” 8It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. 9Then he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.”
2A. THE PRACTICAL LESSON
Why obey Him? We are to obey Jesus…
1B. For our own good (John 2:9-10)
This speaks of our Intimacy with Christ. John 15:15 (NASB) 15“No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. When we obey the Lord, He calls us His friends and He reveals Himself to us.
Amos 3:7 (NASB) “ 7Surely the Lord GOD does nothing Unless He reveals His secret counsel To His servants the prophets.” When we obey the Lord, He reveals to us His purposes and plans. The way to understand the scripture you do not understand is to obey the scripture you know
2B. For our gladness (2:10)
When I obey God I will be a blessing to you. When we obey God, we make those around us glad. Some of you are robbing others of joy and gladness because you are not obeying the Lord. Children rob parents of joy and gladness by disobeying the Lord about how you are to behave and live. Mates rob mates of joy and gladness by disobeying the word of God about how you are to live as a husband or wife. Church members are robbing other church members of blessing because you will not serve, or you quench the spirit of God.
3B. For his glory (John 2:11)
We are to obey the Lord whether we understand all of His commands or not. We must come to the Bible in faith not with human reason. When God performs a miracle, often He uses people to accomplish His purpose. It may be that the Lord would use you as the means to perform His miracle in life of someone else this week. Therefore we must obey Him.
3A. THE PERSONAL LESSON
The Lord pictures His work of salvation in our lives by the elements of this miracle. Notice with me the meaning of …
1B. The pots (John 2:6)
Six is the Bible number for man. Clay represents man in that we were formed from the dust of the earth. Like the pots without Jesus, our lives are dry, empty, and brittle. These pots were used for ceremonial purposes they were used for the Jewish ritual of the cleaning of the hands. They picture how we try our best through religion to “clean” up our lives. The problem is not with our hands but with our heart. It is not physical dirt that separates us from God it is our spiritual defilement that condemns us. We do not need more ritual we need to face the reality that without Jesus Christ we are lost! These pots remind us of our lost condition.
2B. The water (John 2:7)
The water is a picture of the word of God. The Lord has given us His word “to make (us) her holy, cleansing (us) her by the washing with water through the word,” Ephesians 5:26 (NIV). I cannot save you but I can pour the water of the word out on you. The Bible teaches that it is by the preaching of the gospel we are brought to salvation. Romans 10:17 (NASB) 17So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
3B. The wine
The wine represents the joy of new life in Christ Jesus. Psalm 104:15 (NASB) “15And wine which makes man’s heart glad….” The means of the joy is the transformation of our lives. The miracle of the joy is that only Jesus can save us. Acts 4:12 (NASB) 12“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
The measure of the joy is 690 liters this was more than enough. John 10:10 (NASB) 10“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” Jesus came that you would not have to endure religion but so you may enjoy a personal relationship with Jesus.
APPLICATION
This Was "The Beginning of Miracles"
Salvation always is a miracle of God’s grace!
Revelation 22:17 (NASB) 17The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.
John 2:1-11
INTRODUCTION
Introduce myself.
I will be preaching from the gospel of John during our time together. I have entitled our study “The Miracles of the Master.”
John 20:30-31 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
The word “signs” is used to emphasize the value or significance of the mighty work. These miracles show us the power and ministry of our Lord.

And he said to me, "These are the true sayings of God."
